st170 on silvertop management.
Millworm - 16/2/16 at 03:30 PM

can it be done? not sure how the vvt would like it? my silvertop's head gasket is letting go and seeing as I'll be wanting to turbo down the line and it's a high mileage engine i'd like to swap to the st170 seeing as it's got forged rods and generally a better design of engine. only problem as it has to be na for the time being so would like to know if it can run on my dewy management in the meantime. If not i'll go blacktop as its still an improvement over the silvertop

Sensors are all different but if you have them on your old engine swap them over.

Lock the can and get it set up on a rolling road, should be good for 200bhp or more...

Ok cool, I'm using cvh engine mounts at the moment (1.8) as it's in a sierra. Will these bolt up as I heard they have even less mount holes that the blacktop and silvertop

For me offside is the same across the board, nearside is lot different on the st170. I swapped from a silvertop to an st and had to remake the nearside one.

The Wasa will be along soon to give you the proper heads up!

Click my www below and have a look through my blog, might be of some help.

Your ecu can not read the cam phase sensor. The inlet has a mini trigger wheel so the ecu knows how far advanced it is.

So if I just ran without it I take it it'd still run? And can the vvt be locked as it obviously Is no use on my ecu

Check out this thread, silky is the lad who bought mine and got rid of the vvt.

I don't think it will run. It runs sequential injection and needs the cam sensor.

If It does run it will probably be in limp home mode.

So its diffrent to the cam sensor in my silvertop? Could I not swap the sensors? I'd have thought they where interchangeable.

big_wasa - 16/2/16 at 07:55 PM

It's not the sensor, it's just a Vr sensor like any other. It's the cam.

The zetec cam has one lug. This tells the ecu if the engine is on the inlet or exhaust stroke so it only fires the injector on the inlet stroke. Sequential injection.

The st170 has a trigger wheel on the cam so it dose the above but also tells the ecu the swing of the cam.

Put the zetec management on the st and the cam will over read and confuse the hell out of the ecu.

Right I'm with you now, looks like only the bottom end is of use to me then

No. You can run the ST170 on the silvertop ecu ok. You will need to fit the silvertop inlet manifold. The metal inserts in the manifold will need knocking out to get the inlet to line up to the ports if your fussy about 5mm difference between the two, you will see when you try it on.
Then you need a VCT delete kit. Best place i found for one

http://www.massivespeedsystem.com/_massive-speed-system_/massive-speed-vct-delete-systems/g-67397.aspx?aid=9255230

Then you can fit a standard pulley, centre hole needs drilling to the new bolt size. Then the cam timing needs to be set as any other zetec. But the inlet cam needs to be moved about 2 teeth advanced on the pulley. something like 36 to 38 degrees from where it was.

forget cam phase sensor, its not needed.
