what age does a car have to be to qualify for classic insurance

Completely depends on the insurer. Theres no definitive "white line" as far as I know.

general rule of thumb - 15 years or older

I have a 1990 Ford Sierra.

Nothing special, bog standard 2 litre Sapphire Ghia with automatic gearbox.

Long story short.

Got it insured on a classic policy for £100.56p, fully comp.

Lancaster insurance.

most of the ones I've seen are ~15 years, but they often say things like porsche 911's need to be 25 years old to count
