although i have to say it would look a bit ridiculous on a seven. maybe a big car, not a seven.

stupid question of the day:

why couldn't a V6 sound like a V8, I mean, whats the real difference, except 2 extra cylinders?

I've wondered this for a while, and my dad asked me yesterday. I've got a V6 for my car, but i really want that V8 sound

might put a V8 in one day though

Its all to do with the number of times the engine fires in a given time. Well at least in theory. Hence its pretty easy to distinguish between different numbers of cylinders just by sound alone.

Theres also the fact that V6 and V12 engines run very smoothly, V8s run rather 'lumpy' again due to the number of cyinders firing in one revolution.

Rover V8 is no worse around corners than a pinto. But obviously the big grumpy iron blocks take a bit more to swing them round Putting them in the right end al.la. GT40 helps of course

v6 isn't balanced at all, straight 6 is balanced and a v12 is two straight 6's.

Personally i prefer the sound of a v6. I think it sounds more raw. (i know i'm mad) i think i've just heard too many american films with v8's in them.

It's a combination of the number of cylinders, but just as importantly the timing between cylinders in each bank. A V8 with a cross plane crank (i.e. most traditional V8's such as SBC, Rover etc.) has the firing order 1,8,4,3,6,5,7,2. If you sort this into left and right banks it's LRLLRRRL, so in one crank rotation one bank fires 3 cylinders, the other just 1 cylinder, and in the next rotation this swaps over. This gives the classic V8 rumble.

A V8 with a flat plane crank ( e.g. Lotus Esprit, TVR AJP) sounds very flat in comparision, because the firing is evenly distributed between the banks. I think the AJP is something like 1,5,3,7,4,8,2,6

Other thing to remember is if you want your V8 to sound right put in a balance pipe !

Actually, I agree. Don't get me wrong, I love a the sound of a V8 (and it's a mighty fine V8 sound in the video) , but there is something about tuned V6s and V12s that I just can't get enough of. I think it's probably, as a kid, hearing that Countach on song at the very begining of the Cannonball Run, before the music kicks in. Sort of thing you never forget

Hmmmm that piston on the right does not seem to be in the correct place. Is that the lexus V8 (starter motor in the gully?)?
