Anyone interested in a track-day at East Fortune?

Well, any takers? I know of 3 so far...

If I get enough interest, I can get it arranged.

Steve.

Yeah - East Lothian, I think. It's out near Haddington, past Musselburgh.

Was thinking around early/mid-August?

Good - keep 'em coming. I need at least 25 entries to make it viable.

It's open to all, but the track owners are a bit picky on which cars are allowed on the track.

They won't have cars on pure slicks, or anything they deem might damage the track (having just spent a small fortune having it re-surfaced), so I'll need to confirm if they're willing to take the rally car.

Steve

The bit about the slicks confuses me.
Why would a car on slicks damage the track in any way at all ?

John F - very much a non expert.

I agree with you, Zil. I think they're just being over-protective of the track because they've spent so much on getting it re-surfaced.

In saying that, the land owner did tell me that they had a Legend car down there testing a couple of years ago and apparantly it ripped up pieces of tarmac - he reckoned it was due to the locked diff and slick tyres it was running.

I think this experience is where the over-protection is coming from. But they do have sidecars on slicks during bike meetings...

I guess we just need to play by their rules.

Did Jock give you his blessing to use his fizog on your avatar?! (Good pic tho' )

As posted on Pistonheads forum (under 'Scotland' thread):

This is the first event of it's type that we're putting together and we're aiming to make it as professional and hassle free as possible.

We'll only go ahead with it if we get enough numbers to make it commercially viable.

For the day itself, we plan to:

- to ensure that there are properly trained, radio-linked marshals posted around the circuit, just like a race day.
- There will be an ambulance and paramedics on hand.
- Proper insurance will be in place.
- A recovery truck will be in place.
- You will be given a full briefing and strict rules will be enforced throughout the day.
- A professional race driver (or two) will be on-hand for coaching.
- There will be refreshments and food included in the price (East Fortune isn't renowned for it's burger vans, mainly because there aren't any!).

The format will be open pit lane, and the day will last from approx. 9.00am to 5.00pm (with an hour for lunch). This will depend on local authority regulations regarding noise.

I'm not sure what a track-night costs at Knockhill as I've never attended one because I always thought 2-3 hours running was poor value. Perhaps someone can advise? In any case, we're looking at somewhere between £100-150 per driver. Extra drivers can be added to each car for a much smaller fee, and passengers can be carried, for a smaller fee again.

Like I said, we aim to do this professionally to ensure that everyone gets the most enjoyment, safety and value for money from the day. An added bonus is that East Fortune is normally blessed with good weather, even if it's pi**ing down everywhere else! But it does get windy...

Thoughts/comments welcome...

Steve.

Hi Tadltd , I am the guy with the rally car that scotlad was on about. i run a fairly low power 1400cc engine but usually it is on moulded slicks (road legal) i guess half of the regular track guy's will be that same . I would be up for tha format you have put up but 9-5 is a lot of track time .That isn't a complaint but in that time you can burn a huge amount of fuel and destroy alot of rubber . This is why most track day's are limited to 2-3 hrs ish. If the rally car is alowed on i look forward to the day

Hi Neil,

Thanks for getting in touch.

With regards to the track time, all the track-days I've been to have been run all day (all of them down south), and the format works very well.

You normally find that most people have had their fill by 3.30-4.00pm, so if track activity is scheduled to stop at 5.00 this should take care of the 'die-hards' and those that may show up late.

BTW - there's no cost for spectating!

We are aiming to price additional drivers at approx. £50 a head, and passengers at approx. £20 a head (for the full day).

I'll make a decision on whether it's going ahead in the next couple of weeks. There will then be a page on our web-site dedicated to providing information about it and payment facilities.

I've been told "road tyres only", but this was from the land owner. I'll need to confirm exactly what is classed as a "road tyre" with the Melville Motor Club (who we rent the circuit from).

The majority of the circuit has now been re-surfaced, so it'll be even faster than it was previously!

UPDATE....UPDATE....UPDATE....UPDATE....

Been on the phone with Melville Motor Club. Have been advised that it's road tyres only, and MOT levels of silencing - i.e. 98dB.

Available dates are 6th August, or 20th August. If these aren't suitable, there is a possibility to tie-up with Javelin on the 10th September if numbers are low.

I would like to go.

I can make all the dates, but if it was the 20th Aug I would have to turn up a bit later, maybe 11 as I am nightshift that week and would need a few hours sleep.

Cheers

Steve
