Securing Loom
Hi Guy's
As some of you might I bought my car pratically 95% complete, but as I've been doing the dash I've noticed that the loom has been done
with electrical tape. Is this good enough for SVA? If not what do you think is the best thing to use to replace it?

i secured the main part of the loom behind the dash with P clips, although thats probably overkill...cable ties are sva ok in my experience...i
probably wouldnt trust elec tape to hold it on...

Sorry. I probably didn't make myself clear in the original question. The loom is secured to the chassis with p-clips. It's the securing of
the wires together which I'm referring too. Will the electrical tape be OK? Or do I need self amalgamating tape etc?

i used spiral wrap from maplin. i doubt electrical tape on its own is enough...

PVC eleccy tape will probably pass SVA, but is not a good idea for wrapping looms. If you ever want to get it off it will leave a nasty sticky mess
everywhere.
Either remove and re-wrap with non adhesive loom tape or cover with sprial wrap, slit conduit etc.
Try vehicle wiring products for info and materials.

I think the spiral wrap looks the best approach for wiring in situ. Don't want to have it all out and re-seal at this stage. The race is on for
SVA

I think I saw spiral wrap sold in maplins - could be quicker popping in for some instead of mail order?
yes - except it is clear  - black looks nicer
I prefer spiral wrap to split convoluted tubing.

they sell black spiral wrap in b&q, its pretty expensive though...i used it quite a lot, along with insulation tape...

I would always use self amalgamating tape.
Once it's stretched it makes a neater job and is cheaper than pvc tape anyway.
Also it don't leave that sticky mess when it gets wet like pvc.
I agree spiral wrap is the best thing to cover the loom with before fixing.

I did mine with spiral wrap - and every time I want to change the wiring I wish that I'd chosen split convoluted tube!

Mines mainly wrapped with loom tape, but the stuff I have just done for megasquirt is done with black braided expandable covering. Very neat, but not
that easy to change stuff.
When I re-wire my car I will do it all in the expandable stuff....

I've just used some of this whilst rewiring my headlighgts and front indicators. It certainly looks good once done and sealed off with
heatshrink. I also found you can "splay" the braid to feed wires out of the main loom using another smaller dia. section of braid to give
continuous protection - much neater than trying to feed wires out of split conduit.
As you say, possible a PITA if you want to mod again in the future though.
