Nearly a disaster at Maxey
After a bit of work to sort out an oil leak on the car on Saturday morning, myself and MrsM finally arrived at the Maxey show at about 1
o'clock.
As we drove through the gates there was a substantial clunk as I passed over the gate stop sticking up in the middle of the road. I noticed a liquid
trail in my mirrors and quickly pulled to the side. The contact had torn a small hole in my sump which allowed all of the oil to fall out of the
engine in a matter of minutes.
The AA wouldn't recover it because they said it was an accident not a breakdown, so I'm stuck 40 miles from home.
TrevD came out of the show to have a look and then rang around a bit to see if anything could be done. True to form the Peterborough kit car club
mobilised to the rescue. We spent the rest of the day in the show. Alan Theodore went home to collect his Mondeo and came back to tow me back to Dave
Greeves' (locoR1) house. There we we jacked up the car and Dave kindly allowed me to use his excellent facilities to weld up the sump in situ.
Alan then chaffeured me around Peterborough to track down some oil at the right price, and while away Dave refitted my nosecone etc. I managed to
drive the car home from there without further problems.
So credit and thanks where its due:
TrevD and Nikki for moral support.
Alan Thedore for getting it back to civilisation, running me around and being a top bloke. (and missing a barbeque I hear)
Dave Greeves for all his help fixing it, use of his kit and also being a top bloke.
Tracey Greeves for supplying refreshments, keeping MrsM company and putting up with us until late evening.
Paul (Doofus) for helping with the tow.
The Peterborough kit car club chaps for not taking the pi**.
And finally MrsM (Jan) for not getting the hump when it went clunk.
I believe this is what it's all about and I hope I'll be able to return the favours some day.

don't write OT on a new thread title, you're creating the topic, everything you write is very much ON topic!

I would indeed being giving the aa some words of advice.
- Possably it would have prudent to have not mentioned how it had come to leak oil. But there we go.
As you say, i would be ringing to cancel, or atleast see what refund you can get if witht he aim of going elsewhere, only for interest as to what they
say.

Surely if you had drove over the gate stop and got a tyre puncture, it would be much the same thing as a hole in the sump? Or are they going to say
that too is an accident?

I hope not i have no intention of breaking down anywhere near Wellingborough
No problem mate i have no dought you would do the same if the situation was reversed
Still cant understand how you managed it though, over 300 cars displayed at the show plus 1400 punters through the same gates and you holed your sump
Shame we didn't get any pictures of the oil slick ! will have to make do with you using my facilitates as you put it

Glad you got home safe even though it was a bit late.
I suspect it was a bit of a scam to use Dave's extra shiny tools and lay on his luxurious garage floor
Alan was a bit of a star wan't he. I think he wants to be a recovery driver.

but the RAC also says
quote: 1. RAC Membership does not cover:
Vehicle recovery following a road traffic accident, fire, theft, act of vandalism or any other incident
covered by a policy of motor insurance. However, if requested by you, RAC may arrange recovery of
your vehicle following a road traffic accident, fire, theft or act of vandalism but you will be liable for
payment of the associated cost of such recovery including specialist equipment charges if
applicable, You may be able to make a claim against your motor insurer for the cost of us recovering
your vehicle but this will be subject to the terms and conditions of your motor insurance policy.
so I guess it depends on what they can call and accident

A bit sh1tty on behalf of the AA! When I clonked my sump last year, GEM didn't blink about taking me home. They're cheaper than AA and
RAC too
