New Man Hole Cover
Silly me. I drove a Sprinter van over a man hole cover (cast) in my block paved driveway and it smashed through it. Doh! Turns out its a old
manhole cover and you can't get the size any more (approx 650mm x 495mm). Wickes et al do a 600mm x 550mm or somewhere thereabouts but it means
altering the size of the hole! I thought of getting a piece of 1/4 inch sheet steel (thread plate) and getting it cut to size. I have had two quotes
for this at £48 and £110.
Has anyone else have any bright ideas? Has anyone else done this? Would altering the size of the hole be a simple job?
Cheers

I did similar, but a 3.5t luton van over mine.
I searched for old ones, but they are hard to come by.
I paid a builder friend £50 and he made the hole bigger and supplied the new cover and hole. BUT.... that was not in block paving.
I think the only answer is to go for a new hole.
Atleast that way when you break the new one in the future you can get a replacement easier

We had the same problem at work as we are on an old airfield.
Our fitter just made new ones from half inch plate with angle iron reinforcing.
Regards Denis.
Where did that go?

don't write OT on a new thread title, you're creating the topic, everything you write is very much ON topic!

Going toe the local "household recycling facility" isn't a bad idea, I got one a few years ago for a few quid. Also ask at the scrap
metal merchants and even driveway companies. Chances are if they are local then they will have done somebodies drive with the same cove recently.

Thanks for the replies. Stupid of me really to drive on the thing. I think I might take a trip to a builders merchant, then to the tip - then maybe
I'll just go a get some 1/4 steel threadplate.
