Clunk, Bang... Hmmm what was that?

Hi Guys,

been out for a good drive today, excellent weather for a good blast!
However when coming back into town, rolled of the throttle into 3rd or 4th had a BIG clunk and rattle. Put the clutch in let it out and all was fine with a noise that sounded like something clunking down the Trans tunnel.
No oil lost, nothing looks wrong and it now seems to run fine and change thru all the gears ok.
Box was rebuilt by AB performance over christmas.

Its a 954 Blade lump.

Any thoughts on what it could be???

Thanks all...

I've had a few like that. I've stopped - checked everything over. I normally convince myself it's a critical nut or bolt sheared or come loose. It never is though...

I usually find it was whatever tool I left under the bonnet

Usually on top of the gear box, or on the flat bit over the footwells.

Cheers

Yup. Tool under the bonnet. Last time I got back from a blat, went to adjust a bolt that keeps on working loose and found the spanner sitting in the engine bay in the same place I left it after the last repair!!!

So Brilliant you put it twice!!! hehe

Yeah the missed gear was a worry, but normally it just hit a false neutral somewhere, strange!

Check your nuts - prop adapter. Central bearing... etc - you can never be too sure it was a brick/pebble...

Theres a tiny bit of play in the prop, no play in the bearing and the bolts are both there. Cant see the prop adapter.... should i be able to? or is it behind the seal on the prop?
Had the scuttle off and looked town the tunnel, looked from below too and cant see anything. Prop bolts are all still there on the UJ.

Hi charlie, it sounds like you may not have got it into gear properly if you ask me, which as said is one of the best ways to ruin the gears! This was evident when Andy rebuilt it. If i were you, id look into getting a better gear shifing set up fitted, and possibly using cables, or another big gear box bill could be looming round the corner! Im still around if you want to ask any info ever! lol!

Update... got it to do it again in exactly the same place, very odd! Its the gears not meshing from what i can tell, only does it when using the clutch too.
Answer is dont use clutch and its all fine! Worst i get with no clutch is a false neutral, and thats much better on the ears!
