Tin Top Advice

I would like some thoughts on a possible engine change of my Escork Mk2.
Its my current daily driver, 1300cc Xflow engine and I fitted it with a standard twin choke carb. It runs great,really comfortable ride and looks good too but a tad low on economy when compared to some modern machines.

So here are my thoughts:
1) Switch to a zetec and keep the standard ecu.... (is this possible or do I need megasquirt?)
2) Upgrade my xflow to EFI using megasquirt
3) Sell it ( did not really want to coz insurance is peanuts and a good donor for my next car ....one day)

If anyone has done any of the changes to an escort please let me know pro's and con's or any problems that have cropped up.

How about fitting a Zetec with type 9 gearbox and bike carbs / megajolt?? You would then have a superb donor when the time is right to build a locost!!!

As above mate. They go like stink with a 2 litre zetec in.

Failing that a zetec running emerald ecu or summit for the fuel and ign on injection. Standard ecu would be too much hassle with the immobiliser etc,.. Depends how cheap u wanna do it. would probably give u better mpg than carbs.

Failing that small block ford v8 driven with light throttle

Honda Vtec? depends how much you want to spend.

Zetec, bike carbs, megajolt or Ford Orion/Escort, early 90's cvh ecu, the one with a carb and coil pack.

Mazda Mx5 engien and box?

zetec I can get over here quite cheap as well.
Guess that will be another one of my winter projects.

personally i would look around and buy a 1600xflow or 1700 upgrade which someone else is removing to replace with a zetec. you could get their complete set up for a reasonable price as your car looks in to good a condition to be a doner!
my thoughts are if you stick with the xflow the potential value of the 'clasic' car will be better and sell it complete as they are making good money now and then buy doner cheaper and pocket the money for next project!!

Daft question - what are you going to do with the back axle?

They can only handle so much power, if you put a 2l zetec with decent induction / exhaust you're going to be around the limit from what i've read (150ish bhp in a proper car not a little seven).

Is economy your aim? If so get a 1600 zetec (not zetec-s).

Personally for ease of transplant i'd look at a 1600 crossflow, for economy i'd look at FI (or MJ at least) on the 1300 and wear socks instead of big boots.

so would a 1600 zetec be more economical than the 1300 xflow with carbs? What about FI using Megasquirt on the 1300, would that work out just as economical or does the engine design have to do with it (IE twin cams, different head/combustion chamber etc. on zetec)
