Site Sluggish?
Alan B - 2/2/04 at 01:13 PM

Anyone else finding pages very slow to load...or is it a probem at my end?

Fozzie - 2/2/04 at 01:25 PM

Hi Alan

No, I am having problems too, and I have a supposedly 'sooper dooper speed' broadband connection
I have only noticed it this last week though!

So Chris was telling me the other day (and as I said in another thread) he seems to think there's some sort of database issue screwing with things.

It seems a lot better today than the last couple of days so maybe he's working on it?

ned - 2/2/04 at 01:45 PM

i get pages hanging whilst loading on a 100mb/1gb connection. hitting f5 helps sometimes..

Ned.

Fozzie - 2/2/04 at 02:15 PM

Cheers Ned, I'll give that a try next time it 'hangs' (exactly the problem I have)!!
I'll let you know if it works.

Thx guys...

ChrisW - 2/2/04 at 04:56 PM

There's a database issue that I'm working on that has occured since I switched over to the SMP kernel on this server. Going to update MySQL tonight/tomorrow and hope that fixes it!

Chris

ChrisW - 3/2/04 at 12:55 PM

Just done the update so hopefully it'll be fixed. Sorry to anyone that was logged on - site was down for 2 mins or so

Chris

DaveFJ - 3/2/04 at 01:19 PM

seems ok now

Staple balls - 3/2/04 at 02:44 PM

still crapping out now and then for me.

Fozzie - 3/2/04 at 03:13 PM

Double bah here too
It seemed ok at first, then after browsing for a few minutes, the pages just 'got stuck' as they were loading.
I tried Neds tip on hitting F5, it just took the 'progress bar' back to the start, but worked on the 3rd 'hit'.

Been having probs this end as well ,very slow to load and coming up web page not available.
Cheers,
Bob

sgraber - 3/2/04 at 05:05 PM

Aaargh. Several times now I am writing my usual long-winded responses and the darn post submit times-out on. Then I hit the back button and my insightful and pertinent comments are gone...

Should I be taking a hint?

No, really, the site is super slow, somtimes pages never load and I simply give up and get back to work...

Graber

ned - 3/2/04 at 05:18 PM

steve,

just in case, why not highlight and copy (ctrl+c) your response before attempting to submit it, then you won't have to re-type it if it hangs! Irritating I know.

Ned.

sgraber - 3/2/04 at 05:28 PM

Ha! I've just taken to doing that this morning!

It's strange you say that - it runs superbly from here (1MBit broadband) and work. Anyone else get the same problem?

I see the database problem isn't fixed - I'll do some more investigation.

Chris

Metal Hippy - 3/2/04 at 06:51 PM

Does it to me now and again still too mate

Fozzie - 3/2/04 at 06:59 PM

Chris, I have the 1MB broadband too. The other internet sites I visit and browse on are fine, so I really don't think its an intermittant fault with my ISP, it just seems to be on this site after I have been browsing for a few minutes.
I have read somewhere that this Novag virus is slowing some sites down, could this be a factor?

sgraber - 3/2/04 at 07:39 PM

I don't think it has anything to do with bandwidth. I am sitting on a big fat pipe and only having troubles with locostbuilders. It's been getting progressively worse over the past week.

FWIW - Did you just recently upgrade to a new version of Apache? I recently upgraded one of my servers from 1.3 and the machine responded much slower. I re-installed 1.3 and it works great now.

flyingkiwi - 3/2/04 at 08:57 PM

running 576 Kbps and having the same problem, site stalling and having to refresh every now and again. thought it was the missus downloading her 6000 emails but guess not.

Noticed that it seems to get worse the more people are browsing. This after noon around 40 odd people (30 mem, 10 guest) were on and it was really slow, almost every page needed refreshing to load it. This evening doesn't seem so bad, and less people are surfing (19mem, 13 guest)

dunno if this helps???

Peteff - 3/2/04 at 09:26 PM

Same here, it's timing out on me sometimes if I don't stop and refresh it. I'm going back to dialup soon while we get the job sorted out here as I have fallen out with Freeserve. I'm going to look at a different supplier freedom2surf.

yours, Pete.

DrEagle - 3/2/04 at 10:57 PM

I just found out that MS recommend defragging a SQL Database on a regular basis.

At work we had issues with all the 120 odd sites we have and that turned out to be the issue!

ChrisW - 4/2/04 at 12:10 AM

I rolled back to the normal (ie non SMP) kernel on the server earlier this evening which seems to have fixed the refresh problem for me. As for the site being sluggish - I've never seen it here. All pages load within 2-3 seconds.

Load average on the server is low...

12:08am up 4:52, 1 user, load average: 0.10, 0.11, 0.09

Perhaps this is an international connectivity issue?? The server has a 100MBit feed straight out onto Easynet's Tier 1 backbone so I can't see bandwidth being the issue.

Chris

SeaBass - 4/2/04 at 08:45 AM

I'm still having problems exactly as described some pages don't load at all. If you refresh a couple of times they work. Interestingly not just sections or topic pages but also Post Reply etc.

Cheers

JoelP - 4/2/04 at 09:52 AM

yup, same here, just had to refresh to post reply. not the end of the world but worth sorting if anyone can be arsed!

pbura - 4/2/04 at 12:00 PM

Big improvement this morning, no hang at all. Must've defragged the database?

ChrisW - 4/2/04 at 06:57 PM

I think it's being caused when there are loads of people online. I ramped the max limit of threads on the database up a couple of days ago - maybe that's caused it? I'll keep investigating!

Chris

Fozzie - 4/2/04 at 06:58 PM

So far so good with me too!
I have actually been working today, so as yet, not spent too much time browsing the site. Fingers crossed!

Fozzie - 4/2/04 at 07:00 PM

Spoke to soon!!!!!!!!!! As soon as I 'posted' the above reply, it hung for ages and had to do a 'refresh'!!!!!!
ATB Fozzie

givemethebighammer - 4/2/04 at 11:46 PM

Yup, getting problems posting, page hangs so I refresh and end up having posted the same thing several times and I have to go back and delete the duplicate posts.

Julian B - 5/2/04 at 08:33 AM

I have noticed the same sluggishness with loading pages. I only have a paper cup and a piece of string connection to the interweb but I would have to say that the problem only occurs here very rarely
Even with this slight glitch it’s still an excellent site

David Jenkins - 5/2/04 at 01:43 PM

Um... me too! Often when I open a new topic or item I just just get a blank page with a header and the checkerplate background.

Often I can recover by doing 'back' & 'forward', or sometimes just a refresh.

This is when using it at home and work, dial-up and VERY-broadband, respectively.

Good luck with this one, Chris!

David

Mix - 6/2/04 at 09:57 AM

I'm suffering the same problems as Dave, (I only have dial up), and fully concur with his sentiments,

Good luck

Mick

Staple balls - 7/2/04 at 08:56 AM

now this is odd, the site seems to run a *lot* better for me in firebird than it does in IE

Fozzie - 7/2/04 at 12:49 PM

I think its better than it was anyway, so it just might be a coincidence - firebird v IE. I didn't spend too much time on the site yesterday, but when I was on it, no problems, it even posted ok (no doubles!)
Lets hope that Chris has sorted it! once and for all!
ATB fozzie

malcolmstoddart - 7/2/04 at 03:38 PM

I've had the double postings also, as i see some others are too...dunno what the cause is but we are all behind you on this one Chris..

I've been experiencing this for the last several days as well. Seems to be getting worse, especially today. Any of you clever people out there who understand these things over any reasons/solutions?

wicket - 8/2/04 at 07:28 PM

Same as Seabass & JoelP above.

Spyderman - 9/2/04 at 01:10 PM

I've been getting the same problems over the last week or so!

It seems to get progressively worse the longer you stay on the site, upto the point where it just stops loading alltogether.
Very frustrating. To the point that I'm looking in on the site less often now.
