Missing Pictures In Old Threads
907 - 10/11/10 at 07:20 AM

Hi All,

I was looking up some old threads (using the Search facility) and found that most of the pictures are missing.
( 2010 stuff, so not that old )

Do pictures get deleted after a while, or is it me doing something wrong again? (Highly likely)

Cheers,
Paul G

It's not just you, 907 - I have noticed it, too. The 'post your dashboard' thread is one that has lots missing.

I think it is the great, green Locost Picture eater that gets them!

Maybe Fozzie or Chris could shed some light?

Or a more mundane answer is the originals have been moved/deleted?

this may be reason as lots pictures are just web links to likes of Photobucket, is someone then either deletes accound or moves them the like would fail.
Thats my non IT thoughts any way

No, nothing that I have done.....

I have not heard from ChrisW aka The Boss, that he has done it.....of which
I would think it highly unlikely anyway, as that is why the edit button disappears after
a while because peeps were deleting their posts after a while and therefore making
a nonsense of the threads.

So my guess is that peeps have either linked their pics to somewhere such as photobucket
and deleted as has been mentioned, or they have cleaned out their photo archive on here
and thus the pic cannot be linked to upload......so therefore it disappears.

I will try and speak to ChrisW/The Boss later for verification...

The thread I was looking up was by C10CoryM Aluminium scuttle (again).

I replied to this thread with some "how to" pics. Now gone.

To put them on I would have used the Browse box at the bottom of the reply page.

I see that this feature has now gone as well.

I've looked up other threads to check on picture content.

Strange, but the Suffolk/Essex BBQ thread from last June is missing all the pics; apart from the ones put on by Ferg.
(He must have friends in high places. )

The Epona threads are also missing their pics.

Who is it that posts a series of placards that say "This thread is useless without pics"?

It's a shame.

I have left a message for Chris with a link to this thread....

It's to do with the attachments being broken. I've got a list of fixes I want to do on the site today, so maybe I'll get down to this one!

Chris

Thanks Chris

Thanks Chris and Fozzie.

Hope it can be sorted, not just for me but for the many people that search back through
the many many threads for useful info.

Paul G

p.s. Is that too many many's?

ChrisW - 10/11/10 at 12:55 PM

I'll try to get on it today. It just needs a script to be written, but it's not the easiest thing in the world. I'd want to test it on my sandbox server first!

most likely is the pictures are hosted outside of LCB
and have been deleted

to combat this turbosport forum has its own image loader and all pics are saved so even old threads are intact with all pictures it also speeded up the load times too.

LCB all ready has the facility to upload the pictures all it needs is a more friendly way to upload/add to threads

This is a copyright nightmare waiting to happen. What if someone links to a copyrighted image on another site? The website would then copy this over to the LB server, clearly a breach of the usage rights.

The issue described in this thread is down to attachments being disabled in posts due to a vulnerability being spotted in the code which could have compromised the site. I need to find a way around this.

Any news Chris?

Right, I think I have this sorted now. Wrote some scripts to remove the attachments from the database, shove them into people's photo galleries, and link them to the posts they were previously attached to.

Therefore if you have attached files in the past, you will now have an 'attachments' folder in your photo gallery containing them.

NOTE: This only applies to images at the moment. I've not decided what to do about non-image files yet!

This should also speed up the overnight backup as it will reduce the database size by about 75%, meaning less data to dump out each night. I'm sure you've all noticed the site going down for 10 mins or so each night at 1am? This should drop to 2-3 minutes as of tonight

This is also why the site has been going slowly for the last hour or so. The scripts I've written to deal with this are putting a high load on the database and disks! All done now though.

Anyway, I'd appreciate feedback on whether this has worked or not!

Cheers, Chris

Well done Chris.

Only today I looked up the thread on rubber mounts to find the pics missing.

Perhaps a physical limit on pic size would aid the sites running. Just a thought.

Thanks again.
