I took a look in my u2u outbox and it has kep copies of all outgoing messages; dating back to when I joined

I guess it would make sense to delete any old ones that you do not wish to keep anymore; (will free up space on the server)

in reality u2u messages don't take up much space, they are plain text and not normally very long. You'd save more space by clearing any junk from your photo archive!

there is a limit (i've reached it several times) where you'll be prompted to delete some before you can send any more.

i reach it every few days the rolling total is about a years worth. Its nice reading what happened a year ago
