i'm sure this has been mentioned sometime before but now seems a good time to bring it up again. As on other '7' forums I think the ability to be able to lock a thread to further replies by the thread owner would be a good idea.

I doubt Chris is on here enough to even read this and certainly doubt he has the time to do it, but I hink its worth us discussing it anyway

Sounds like a useful feature. But wouldn't we need a more available webmaster to deal with any abuse.

For example it would be easy to start a thread saying something dangerous or libelous things then lock it to prevent response. You need a moderating admin to remove that kind of thing.

I'd hope we wouldn't need it, but fear it would happen at some point.

I agree with self policing as we already do. Eventually members will get bored of the thread and it will drop off the bottom. I don't agree that the topic starter should have the ability to lock threads either.

I don't see why we need to stop freedom of speech on here.

If everyone sticks the topic of BUILDING cars locking threads shouldn't be necessary.

Furthermore, if there are traders who are not giving good service, this community needs to know about it.

Locking threads would be very difficult to police because someone determined enough could just start a new thread. I am sure that most people on here are grown up enough to stick to topic and keep any malicious outbursts to themselves.

I agree with hellfires and calvinx comments: carry on as we are, self policing.

Can't see the need myself.

Surely any thread that should be locked is one that is in the interests of the whole community. An example off the top of my head would be the Electrosys (sp?) thread, or threads that relate to the various saftey mods to the chassis (rorty, mcsorley etc)

IMHO we could have a page from the homepage being an FAQ archive spilt into various categories (probably the current forum headings). Then under each heading would be a list of links labelled with what they are.
This should stop alot of the repeative topics too as the answers would be more accessible.

There is an FAQ wiki that can be used like that already. Unfortunately maintaining a wiki is a lot of work!

Never mind locking threads, Please Please Please can we once and for all get rid of the Miserable Caterham and three word story threads

I get the feeling that sometimes that this server is groaning under the strain and we could just do without these particular threads which are either a) offensive or b) an utter waste of resources

that is a good point mark, i get very pissed off by the slow server sometimes, but never realised that damned 3 word story might be to blame! But i remember how upset i was when zil deleted the old one (ok, not that upset really....), but i think people would miss their little piece of drivel for the day.

Perhaps is a few more of our non paying traders (you know who you are! ) chipped in, this forum might actually get the server it needs and deserves!

I think we really need chris to keep more of an eye on the place in general, to ensure everyone pays up.

And i too would say no to moderators, im proud of the fact that we dont need one. Restraint and respect are all it takes.

Deleting individual threads won't do anything appreciable for the forum's speed (or occasional lack of), compared to the size of the database as a whole a couple of threads would be like p*ssing in the ocean. That said anything to cut the database size noticeably would certainly help, most particularly with the search function, so auto-trimming less necessary sections may well alleviate things.

It seems that certain people may have more influence than others on here and are able to get threads that they dont like removed.......

Well ChrisW can remove anything anyone can persuade him to - getting in contact is probably the biggest challenge considering how busy he is.

Other than that the thread owner (i.e. the person that started it) can delete the whole thread by deleting the first posting.
