Can the Luego banner be presented in a different way?
David Jenkins - 8/9/03 at 01:35 PM

Chris,

Is there anyway of rejigging the banner so that users don't get a fresh image every time a new screen is opened?

I have absolutely no problem with Luego having their ad at the top of the screen, but when I'm working at home on my dial-up line it puts several seconds delay into every page load.

If you only showed a new banner at each login, or every time you go to a new subject area, then it would be a lot more david-friendly.

If the same banner is shown across all pages then the browser can get the image from the cache in a split-second.

cheers!

David

I get exactly the same problem at work due to out crappy 64k link.

I would ahve expected the browser to cache the image locally but it doesnt do this.

At least half the time looking at this site is the banners being downloaded.

Also, the 'big luego' looks really lardy in the piccy (the orange car?)

What banner?

I see no Luego ads here...

Peteff - 8/9/03 at 11:33 PM

I blocked it but it cuts out the red and grey envelopes as well so I unblocked it again. They must be linked.

yours, Pete.

Pete,

I just changed my background because I wasn't fond of the chequerplate....the banner ads vanished too.....not that I'm against the ads....anything that supports the forum is welcome IMO..
Envelopes seems fine.

I don't notice any delay while pictures load on my 100mb connection.....

B*st*rd!

...but I find it's OK while I'm in the office with our direct connection to our ISP - at home's the problem, where there's no way of getting broadband within this millenia...

you can get satellite dish broadband at home if you've got lots of money to spend, or do what i do, don't check the forum at home! (i got wey too impatient with dial-up a long time ago, but can you blame me with 100mb at work!)

Just checked the BT website and we only need 3 more to register and they will upgrade the exchange. Tiscali do a 256k connection for £19.99 a month plus a £50 connection fee which sounds o.k.

yours, Pete.

Sorry Pete but just because the "trigger" level has been reached is no guarentee that BT will ugrade the exchange any sooner than they want to thank you very much!

For those who can't afford the Satellite system mentioned by Ned (it's about £800 installed and £60 per month and it's s***) search for a local broadband initiative and see a) if there is one and b) how far along they are with a roll out. Here in sunny Bacton some of the locals are setting up a wireless network with local money because they failed to get any cash from EEDA. It should be as good as ADSL and about the same price but without the BT involvement.

Apologies for the OT post.

I have NTL broadband at home at 600k service.

Its way way better than dial up and id never go back unless in dire financial straits.

Its like a pushbike against a ferrari.

25 quid a month. Obviously you need to be on an NTL cable area!

Someone I work with has BT and reports no problems.

BT aren't usually a problem once you've got the service it's just getting the service in the first place is a bit of a chore.

I've got ADSL (via BT) at home and I'd agree that I've had very few problems in the past year. I'd never go back to a normal modem setup. Here at work we've got the satellite system which as I've said is pretty poor at best. My office is out of town in the sticks and BT have no plans to upgrade the exchange for ADSL. So far the Bacton Broadband lot have had 150 people sign up to have a wireless system in the absence of BT getting their figure out. BT still wouldn't say that that's enough to warrent the upgrade which apparently costs £70k per.

My company piloted one of the first community wireless broadband networks in the UK and we've built a couple more since then. I'm connected via it now! Website at ]www.denhambroadband.co.uk. Drop me a line if you need any help with it.
