Well the heading of this thread was correct even if my rantings don't quite match.
I have more problems with this site than any others out there. The current gripe is I still cant see any of the photos in the archive, and want to check out something that's been reffered to.
I can see pics in all other sites, so it's not anything disabled in my puter, and I have to turn off most of my firewall's (Zone Alarm Pro) cookie protection as it is just to be able to visit this forum (I then turn it all back on for surfing elsewhere).
Anyone else having these problems? It's been one of the reasons I haven't been frequenting the forum as much as in the past, as I'm fed up having to alter my settings just to log in, and even then there's less than optimal functioning.
Bah!

rorty, try sygate personal firewall It's free, works very well, and doesn't get in the way like zone alarm.

ChrisW - 12/12/03 at 11:05 AM

Those software firewalls are a complete waste of time. Typical consumer nutsack that if you've spent £30-odd on it you want it to do something so it blocks absolutley everything (most of it unnecessarly) and shouts murder if even the slightest odd bit of data comes your way. They really do cause more problems than they solve relying on consumer ignorance as to what exactly is going on.

If you want a firewall, get a hardware one (ADSL modem with built in NAT router). If you're on dialup there really is no need! If you're serious, something like smoothwall (free Linux based firewall with idiot proof front end) running on a defunct pentium PC. Also has the advantage that you can connect multiple PCs to the same ADSL/cable/modem connection.

no doubt a decent hardware firewall is better, but little old me is sitting the the DMZ, so i like something to get in the way and for a software firewall, sygate just sits in the corner being quiet 99% of the time.

Ben_Copeland - 12/12/03 at 12:05 PM

My zonealarm doesn't give me any problems and i certainly haven't got any problems with the photo archive either.

So Rorty it must be your connection/computer. There's not that much wrong with this website. It works fine for most things. And you'd never really notice most of the little things that need doing.

ChrisW - 12/12/03 at 12:09 PM

If you're talking about DMZ's you obviously know what you're on about. It's more the general consumer that see's "you were just pinged from w.x.y.z!!" and thinks they're being hacked that cause all the trouble.

Cheers for your comments Ben!

Chris

no doubt, it's pcworld user software that causes the problems, norton internet security whatnot doohdah is a good example, from what i remember, pretty much any incoming traffic popped up as "someone's trying to access your computer"

whereas sygate allows you to block/allow/ask what you want allowed at the network and only makes a fuss when you install new apps (and in some cases, update them) other than that, it's nice and quiet, also yet to have anyone get through it

mines set up to allow most cookies but bar all incoming signals that werent initiated here. Dont have a clue what it does really but all seems well....

blissful ignorance

does mean i dont get mail alerts though.

Rorty - 14/12/03 at 06:17 AM

Even if I turn Zone Alarm off alltogether, I still have problems on this site. I still can't see any pics in either the albums or in any posts. I can see some avatars, though some have a square with a cross in them. The avatars I can see are a mixture of formats, so it's not an extension problem.
My original point was, with Zone Alarm running at a moderate setting (and it does work well for me), I'm able to visit 28 other forums and hundreds of other sites without the slighest problem. Something's going on, but I haven't a clue what.
