Best van under £3K?
Nickp - 27/10/14 at 12:00 PM

My Dad's looking to buy a MWB high top van for under £3K.
We seem to be down to 3. Ford Transit, Renault Master and Merc Sprinter.
To be under £3K the Merc is going to be a fair bit older ('01/'02) with starship mileage (250k+), but could still be a decent bet?
The Transit seems to be the safe option, spares etc. Bit newer ('05/'06) than Merc and lower mileage (150K+) for this money.
The Renault Master seems to be the most van for the money. We've seen a nice looking '07 3.0 dci one with 100K on it for £2600. Anyone heard any horror stories about these?
Any advice / opinions welcome

There's a reason why they all sit a similar prices. They are all likely to go as wrong as each, one due to age, one due to quality and one because it sits between the other two!
My money would be in transit, if it goes wrong its common:-cheap, and the price your wanting to pay they are all likely to go wrong at some point!

Medium Wheelbase, somewhere between SWB and LWB
High top, does this really need an explanation?

Transit. Obviously
Sprinter, I like them, but they always rust so badly
Renault, well, its french
Transit, can't beat them imo, common so parts are cheaper

He's just been offered an '03 one with a 2.3 Duratec petrol. I didn't even know such a beast existed!!

Apparently not, 145bhp and many got a factory approved LPG kit from new. Could be worth a punt if it turns out to be cheap enough.

yeah the 2.3 duratec was an option, but not exactly a popular choice for the vans

this is the engine you want for your kitcar if a 2.0 just isn't enough for you - so when your done with the van it'll be a nice engine donor for a new project

I'd already thought of that
