Happy birthday.

Congrats my old man is 95 but getting very ditsy but still bouncing around. I keep thinking if I get to 80 I would be very happy as only a young 53 at the moment and still having both parents feel rather lucky.

97 is a fair old age - makes me re-consider my 69 year old parents as "relatively" young

It's funny how times (and health expectations) have changed - someone in my village has just died at the age of 72. Everyone's first reaction was "Ooh - that's not very old".

When the state pension for 60-year-olds came in very few people lived long enough to collect it, and even fewer collected it for more than a few years. The expectation then was that people would live until their mid-60s, unless you were very rich (or very lucky).

Nowadays people expect to live much longer, all being well - so best wishes to your father!
