X-flow to zetec, same drivetrain?

Just wondering: Would it be possible to just replace my 1.6 x-flow to 2.0 zetec without changing gearbox and live excort axle? Will the parts fit, and will it take the power? The car is scratch build "book-car".

What kinda box? Type 9 or older?

The zetec will bolt up to any rwd box. You just need to get the clutch combo sorted if the input on the box is not a 23 spline (not Type 9)

There shouldn't be a problem, although you will need a different clutch, I can't remember which one you would need but if you do a search you'll find the relevent thread or someone will reply in this thread.

We changed from 1.6 XFlow to 1.8 Zetec with no problems. Need to fabricate a new exhaust and alternator mount.

What do you think about the parts handling the power? Standard 4 speed and live axle.

Power about twice from original, but as the car is light (540 kg today) maybe no problem?

Avoid using the Escort box (those from RS models are OK) the standard Escort 4 speed is weak --- especially Mk1 boxes which are much weaker than Mk2.

To replace the basic Escort box with heavier duty Ford box you need to change the propshaft as the other boxes are longer and have larger diameter output shafts.

English axles should take the power OK for road use even light competition use, the Salsbury pattern are a bit stronger.

I didn't know you were speaking of the 4 speed box. I suppose that the 4 speed box will do but I would (did) change to a 5 speed sierra box. The axle will cope fine.

Ford 4 speed box covers a lot of gearbox types -- some like the 2000e were truly excellent but the box fitted to the Escort Mk1 1000/1100/1300 would have the life expectancy of a Dolphin in the Sahara.

Thanks for your comments, and sorry for not beeing very clear!

The complete drive train is from the same donor, a standard 1979 escort mk2 1.6L.

I´m not using the car for any racing, just inspired sunday drive fun on narrow roads, and the x-flow, (updated to GT-spec) is starting to feel a bit "slow".

I´m trying to stick to the locost theme, so any engine change needs to be reasonably cheep, and if possible not so laber intence.
