Pinto EEC iv not sparking
irvined - 31/7/11 at 09:18 AM

Hello,

I'm in the process of replacing a friends Pinto, as part of the 'upgrade' we're converting it to injection. The engine came out of a running car (another seven) and uses the EEC iv ECU.

I've used the loom that came with the engine, complete with distributer and ignition amplifier, but so far its not running.

When I power it up, the fuel pump kicks in for a couple of seconds, then stops, but when I crank the engine, there is no sparking or squirting.

I've been through the wiring diagram and everything seems to check out, I've no reason to believe the loom wasn't working before, or that there is an inherent fault with anything I suspect its either a broken wire, or I've missed an earth or something.

Any ideas on things to check?

Cheers

David

Sounds like there is no switching from the distributor, I have had this problem on mine twice. First time was a worn bit of insulation on the coil wire, second was the dizz had died.

Did you retain the data link connector for self diagnosis?? If so IIRC you bridge the connections using an LED and count the flashes which gives any fault codes stored.

Which ones do you test with the LED?

Been a while since I did one but it's worth trying all of the combinations as there is only 3 and using a LED you won't harm anything else . Will see if I can find any information I had at one time . Also had a Datacheck diagnostic machine that did them but not sure where it is any more.

One of the connections must be grounded to read the codes. If you remove the earth at the wrong time you'll wipe all the codes and have nothing to read when you then get it right later.
