MWW Publishing whos who got your email address!

Can someone explain how my unique email address for locost builders is being used by this SCAM company..

Would be interested to know if anyone else has had this.

Moss

Good Day,

You were recently nominated as a biographical candidate to embody your industry in the Who's Who, and for inclusion into the upcoming 2010 "Honors Edition" of the registry. We are pleased to inform you that on July the 30th, your candidacy was ratified by our executive committee.

The Office of the Managing Director appoints individuals based on a candidate's current position, and in most cases with information obtained from researched executive, academic, and legal sources. The director thinks you may make an interesting biographical subject, as individual achievement is what Who's Who is all about. Upon final confirmation you will be exhibited among thousands of accomplished individuals in the Who's Who Registry. There is no cost to be included.

We do require additional information to complete the selection process and kindly ask that you access this form on our website by Clicking Here

Sincerely,

Edward Montaigne
Managing Director

Because you have you full email address in your profile.

Change it so something like:
me (at) gmail.com

rather than:
me@gmail.com

then the bots wont pick it up.

I removed my email address from here and (and other forum sites) ages ago to cut this spam route out.

I'm happy to hear from other LCBers anytime and U2U is the perfect mechanism for that. If I want to take things off-line or send attachements etc then email addresses can be swapped via U2U in private

I rarely get spam......(maybe its virgins spam filter?), but I do get some.

I have to have my email addy on here so you lot can get hold of me in case of 'emergency'.

The downside of removing your emails from your profile details, is that when there is work done on the server, it will log people out.

That means if it doesn't recognise your log in, you cannot reset your password, as you have no email listed.

So that means that you either have to email me or ask a good friend that can log in for my email addy.

That means that I have to reset each of you manually ......

Mucho hassle for both you guys and me....

Not being a server room techie, not sure what the way around it is, without making parts of the site a 'closed shop' .....

I have a few ideas, but need to speak to ChrisW ......

I have a unique email for locost builders which is for my email management. This would be for storing locost related email, which has never happened, as U2U is preferred. May I suggest that U2U be the default method of communication and that an email is then sent to say that you have forum mail, similar to those social web sites.

Its a bit of keep up at the back here.

Regards

Hall

Just looking at the logs of my mailserver (yes I am that geeky), there are a bunch of entries such as these :-

quote:

Nov 27 06:05:40 mail postfix/smtpd[24206]: NOQUEUE: reject: RCPT from unknown[122.164.161.63]: 554 5.7.1 Service unavailable; Client host [122.164.161.63] blocked using zen.spamhaus.org; http://www.spamhaus.org/query/bl?ip=122.164.161.63 - see http://zen.spamhaus.org.; from=<ijusaadaai@fraktsidan.se> to=<pyoqg@smithfamily.org.uk> proto=ESMTP helo=<ABTS-TN-dynamic-063.161.164.122.airtelbroadband.in>
Nov 27 06:46:51 mail postfix/smtpd[24303]: NOQUEUE: reject: RCPT from unknown[189.105.0.116]: 554 5.7.1 Service unavailable; Client host [189.105.0.116] blocked using zen.spamhaus.org; http://www.spamhaus.org/query/bl?ip=189.105.0.116 - see http://zen.spamhaus.org.; from=<tubicgghu@truthtree.com> to=<brek_leunge@smithfamily.org.uk> proto=ESMTP helo=<189105043121.user.veloxzone.com.br>
Nov 27 06:46:53 mail postfix/smtpd[24303]: NOQUEUE: reject: RCPT from unknown[189.105.0.116]: 554 5.7.1 Service unavailable; Client host [189.105.0.116] blocked using zen.spamhaus.org; http://www.spamhaus.org/query/bl?ip=189.105.0.116 - see http://zen.spamhaus.org.; from=<ufdcyuopjwmqmq@libertyfngp.com> to=<qptvem@smithfamily.org.uk> proto=ESMTP helo=<189105043121.user.veloxzone.com.br>

Now the smithfamily domain has precisely 6 e-mail addresses with it, yet some fool spambot in Brazil is trying out random strings so even a unique address which you never let out into the wild will still potentially get spammed.
