...is it possible for the site to retain the text you have written so if you loose connection or press back you dont loose a post you have spent time on?

I believe that's down to your browser? It used to be a problem with IE but since moving to chrome it seems to keep the text when I go back.

Someone may be able to shed more light....

EDIT: Just tried, chrome definitely keeps the text when I press the back button.

How often have typed a big long in depth reply to someone and then accidentally hit backspace? The 2nd version usually becomes a one word reply

I've done it hundreds of times

Cheers
Davie

I use IE9, but most other forum sites I use retain it if you go back and forward, ive always assumed its the forum software, maybe its both.

Edit, just tested it on another site (vbulletin) and not only does it work after going back, I can even close the window and reopen it and it stays!

When you finish a long post, press both alt and A (which will select all text) then alt C to copy it, then if you go back, alt V will paste it back, not a fix but a workaround.

Thats ok if you think your gonna loose connection (and I do do that when using my mobile) but doesnt help with the above mentioned accidental BACK command.

Yeah - it is highly annoying - done it myself several times, and as Davie says, your second attempt is usually extremely short! (I use firefox).

I write any lengthy posts in a word processor first so that I've got a copy if the connection breaks (Keeps my spelling in cheque two. ;-) )

I have an add-on for Firefox, called Lazarus. If you are filling in a form and, for some reason, you don't complete it then you stand a fair chance of getting most of it back by opening the Lazarus window and selecting from a list of entries.

These sort of plug-ins really worry me in terms of security.

Fair comment - but I'm the only person who uses my computer. I wouldn't use it on a more public machine. Also, it doesn't keep everything - no passwords, for example - and it replaces long numbers (e.g. credit card numbers) with zeros. Finally, mine is set to delete anything older than 1 hour.
