Spam reduction possibility?

I was so glad to see yet more phone unlocking threads being resurrected this morning, sent me down memory lane with all the phones I used to own! Anyway, it did have me thinking, is it worth having any thread older than 12 months or so locked for new replies? If someone does genuinely want a follow up they can create a new thread and simply refer back to the old one.

I'm not sure whether it would actually restrict the conservatory salesmen and his friends, but it might be worth a try?

fair point but a lot of good build diary threads can easily run longer than 12 months.

Ah yes, good point. It could just be applied to the chat and marketplace sections?

Judging but the volume of fake accounts on the site, a better aproval system would appear prudent. (funny wibbly letters style of thing etc.)
After that the normal manual fake/spam accounts could be dealt with by a moderator team.

I agree something needs to be looked at, just recently several of us have pointed out the amount of new registered users. There are pages and pages of them all with zero posts.

We know the users who spam, so can't the system or admin delete these users?

Autolocking the thread 12 months after the last post would do the trick.

They can, but i think the current admin team are fairly busy elsewhere.

don't write OT on a new thread title, you're creating the topic, everything you write is very much ON topic!

You would do it from the date of the last post, rather than the first post, but I must say I find it really annoying when (on other forums) you find a x+y month old thread (say, using the 12 months example, a 14month old thread) thats exactly what you where looking for but you cant reply to it to add some information, or ask an additional question.
A good compromise is to have a tick box you have to tick if its only x months old. But that doesnt stop spam.

That's why I was wondering about reducing it to just cover the chat and marketplace areas. Chats very rarely contain anything long term useful, and if you're replying to a for sale ad after 12 months then you're very optimistic!

I dont think a 12 month cap is the answer, some post do get dug up and have valuable information added or questioned. ChrisW is obviously very busy and Fozzie doesnt get on much, we just need a moderator or 2 who can do the housekeeping.
