A new error thingy

I've been getting the following error displayed:
Error 2002: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)

The only bit I understand is about socks, and I am wearing some (2)

I get that sometimes

Usually on the photo archives.

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

Sorry about that. My colleague was 'fiddling' with the database - well, actually moaning that it's taking such a high load and trying to optimise the data.

Have got to shift the site onto it's own box again soon as this one has been used for so many 'little jobs' it's not so dedicated any more!

Also, we have a network online in Redbus III now which should save me a bit of cash on the day to day running if I move LB there.

It costs my business about £150/month to keep this site going. Now we're moved over (see the maintenance topic) I should be able to get that down to £75-ish.

We use about 200GB of traffic IIRC (would need to double check) but we're not particularly efficient as everyone logs on in the evening so that equates to about 1MBit on 95th percentile.

Seeing as it 'costs' you or your business then chris, should we now not think about a subscription for membership ? I'm sure the amount of information we all get from the site is of such a great value, nobody would mind !! It might even stop the time wasters from joining and stiring things up !!
Anybody else with such thoughts ????

Jason

Just had a thought, do 'Luego' cover this for you chris ?

Jason

Luego sorted me out with a load of parts (£1500 worth I think but I've not added it all up) in exchange for 18 monts of having their logo at the top and bottom of all the pages. It's coming towards the end of that time now, so they will be given first refusal on another term. I have had a few other companies express an interest so if Luego don't go for it I guess I'll see what else is on offer. Would far rather go down that route than take a subscription off everyone. If you want to show your appreciation you buy me brekkie at a WLM meet

Am open to suggestions tho!

Chris

Jason - I agree with your comment about membership/subscription of some kind. It's a fantastic site with lots of information and informative friendly people.

There are many inactive members who probably can't remember their passwords now or the like.

What about extensive rights for paying members:
member: more than 1 post/day with pictures
member: 10Mb attachments of any file extension - obvious limitations
member: free webspace

Just a thought but £12/annum doesn't sound out of the way I reckon. Not much but it will ease at least some of your companies costs.

I've put a 'donate' button on the front page. It is far from compulsory, and there will be no threats of "the site will go down" if I get bugger all. However, if you feel you want to send me something for my effort please don't hold back.

Jason - found the bits for you, will bring them to the xmas meal.

Cheers, Chris

Much appreciated Steve

It's evenings like tonight when I was supposed to be in the workshop that I want to just jack the whole thing in. Instead of working on my car I'm dealing with a threat of libel action....

Barclays do a thing called ePDQ lite which is quite good. Also, paypal do 'checkout' style transactions these days without the end user having to have a paypal account. Might be worth a look - certainly cheaper than having a PDQ machine when 99% of your transactions will be CNP.

BTW have you got hosting sorted out
