Profile details or accountability

Chris W,

I've posted in 'Interior and Seating'.

I really feel the site should require a greater amount of personal details before registration is allowed.

At least a real name allied with an email address that's active posted in profile.

I know this is easily abused also but at the moment there are postings which are dubious to say the least.

No name, no location, no contact details.

Could the name fields be made mandatory ?

I'm probably talking but people should be somewhat accountable.

Rob Lane

legsss website

I took my email out the other day after looking at a website of the member who had just joined. It was nothing to do with anything I'm into but if they are here to build a car that's o.k. I just don't want any spam from something like that. There's always U2U if anyone wants anything.

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

I reply to WSCC ads by the PM mail button as I'm not a full member. It allows response to an ad without being able to post. Even then you have to register first with full details.

I only feel that at least a real name and some kind of email is required on profile. Post using your 'user' name but don't hide.

There's the mail button at bottom I notice.

Not everyone posts any details in profile, which is a shame really. Just a name and location is better than anon.

Pete, just who is that Avatar ? Can't wait for needles to drop!

I've just looked at three members who have just joined, their websites listed are PORN sites. I can see what you mean Pete !

'bboo' and both 'weber' users !!!

I've looked again and there's lots, they need weeding out

I have also noticed the influx of dubious new members! ChrisW did put up a thread regarding this, and if I notice any when I am online, I u2u him and he does deal with it!

http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/viewthread.php?tid=19253

Personaly I think its OK to have a bit of fun, but I also think that there should be a valid location, and a contactable email to be able to jointhe site, it might also stop these plonkers from being able to flood the site with bogus members and their dodgy sites.
Having said that I am not that technicaly minded, but surely it should be possible, even if the 'personal' stuff is just for ChrisW's 'eyes'. all IMO of course

Poor mangogrooveworkshop thats the trouble with being located near "Jolly Knockers" nothing is going to be for sale close by, just a cross we have to bear for living north of Watford.

Ebay is the pits for advertisers giving obscure incomplete locations -- usually you can find at least four places with the same in the UK -- fine if its a DVD thats being sold nor so handy if its a non runner Sierra.

I'm in two minds - I use my real name 'cos I don't feel that I have anything to hide (just like Rob). If someone else wants to use a silly name then it usually doesn't bother me - the ones I want or need to know can usually be U2U'd for details, or I've met them personally.
However, I have seen personal attacks made by people using pseudonyms, with no website, e-mail, or similar. Cowardly, as Rob has said.
Also, if we start to get spammed by pornographers or con-men then action will have to be taken - but I don't think that will be easy unless we go for a fully-closed group, where prospective members apply to Chris, he confirms their e-mail, then lets them in. Bureaucracy gone mad!
No easy answer...

David

Must admit that when i joined I used a silly name (the same one I use for most sites) and was reticent about giving out personal details. However, now I find myself on here a lot I kinda wish I had gone for a more 'legit' name like DaveFJ.......

Profile Details of Accountability

I think 99.9 % of members of this excellent site would agree to giving more details, i 'm broad minded but some of the garbage that can come from an innocent search, or link goes ways beyond this.
I am not that 'up' on computers and to get a screen full of pop up's or porn that won't go away is annoying to say the least, but from what I understand with the whole internet spam / porn crap it's a case of shutting the stable door after the horse has well and truly bolted

My site name is the nickname I have had since school days, taken from my surname of Foster. I think most 'Fosters' get called by this at some point!
Not being a computer techie, I have developed some sort of 'sense' on new members so called names. I have found the best way to check and NOT link to their site, is look at their profiles first, that should almost certainly confirm it. If ya dont want all that sort of stuff clogging up your computer, or you are not sure, u2u chrisw, he will let you know whether it is safe or not.
Whilst being a broadminded person, I do not want unintentional links to porn sites.
So if in doubt, check the profiles first, especially the location, and registered date, or u2u chrisw

I must admit that I don't have my e-mail in my profile, simply because I started to get spam that could only have originated from someone scanning this forum. Sad but true. I can be contacted indirectly though, either by U2U or via the details on my website.
I would cheerfully make my e-mail known to ChrisW if there was an option to make it invisible to general forum members. It's not that I don't trust you lot - it's them other buggers!

season's greetings,

David

Yup, a good 'tell-tale' sign, is in 'last active' its usually 1/1/70 at 00.00 hours!
If ya see that DONT touch owt else and u2u ChrisW, and he will duly remove it!
having said that, I think Chris must be out for a Crimbo lemonade, as he hasn't read the last u2u!

I have now removed my email address, having read the previous remarks. I have been hounded by spam on only one of my email addresses, and guess which one that was!
I have left on my hotmail address,as that seems to be unaffected, and will also promptly reply to any u2u's people send me
Being a parent myself, I would be mortified if any of my kids innocently accessed this type of stuff.

The email address is use on here is unique to the site, it is not used for anything else, and it is the only place that I have made it available.

I am getting about 20 emails per day from .nl sources saying that webmaster this or webmaster that has rejected my emails to someone I have never heard of. I have also been offered 25 metric tonnes of viagra in the last few weeks - any connection?

The delivery error e-mails are very often either virus carriers, or trojan/worm carriers.

Never had a problem advertising my email, but I agree with the scanning of new members and a location bit, been looking for months on the uk map for "somewhere sunny" still haven't found it. Do you think it's in Scotland???

I think a post code and nearest postal town would be a start, not necessarily published, but a start point for ChrisW to filter the purveyors of viruses, porn, second identities etc
