WEBSITE CRASHING
Whats wrong with this website?
Every night it crashes at least once.
Does anyone else have this problem and does anyone know how to solve it?
Sorry for ranting on but this is doing my head in!

Doesn't crash on me but it has been very slow lately. I guess it's getting much more traffic these days (such is the price of fame)

I'm having problems with Locostbuilders too. Then again, I've had a few problems over the last few days with Tiscali Broadband in general
God damned infuriating it is too

The boring answer is that there are too many connections for the database to handle, so it takes a while for it to reset and for you to get your page.
Nothing to do with your broadband or your computer, could be solved with a larger scale database solution.
Oh did I mention that I'm a web developer? I don't just know boring computer stuff because I'm a spod. Honest. ;o)

max connection is sytem software limited
to be able to handle more connections the server will need more memory
and / or CPU power..

Chris, does the database use connection pooling? Haven't touched a MySQL database in a while but can (if you like) have a look at ways to
improve on the default settings if you have access to the server? (Assuming of course that you are using the default settings)

Added : Not necessarily tks, the number of connections is usually set as a predefined number, in order to save on memory etc. Increasing the number of
connections allowed might not solve the problem if they aren't being recycled effectively. Normally changing the way the connections are shared
does the trick.

Maybe if ChrisW had time to, he could re aply the list of users logged on as well as visitors, then we could all see why it was so slow, not knocking

I have noticed on a couple of other forums, that various sections are "sponsored" by various firms.
Robin Hood have sections sponsored by ebay, insurance companies, Maplin, RAC, AA etc:-

Not sure that we would get Lotus to sponsor us? but most of my car came from ebay!
Autotrader / Free Ads - Donor Cars.
Ebay - Bargains Elsewhere.
I'm sure we could come up with a good list / package, then ask Chris to make contact with them?
Perhaps ChrisW could do the same, and raise some extra cash that way, for improvements / maintenance?

iirc its PHP thats the problem, for each connection to the webserver a new connection is spawned on the db server, their is (or was) no way for PHP to
pool connections as this would involve PHP keeping track of things, iirc their was some sort plugin module for it on sourceforge but i remember
hearing it didnt work very well.

The next release of oracle has a feature for php pooling on the svr sides that allows you to reuse php svr sessions/connections. Beta of it is out
now. So, switch to oracle!!! ;-)

problem is that Chris is always busy and would rather be making money (fair enough) and i think he must have lost interest as I gather his viento is
gathering rust and has never been finished. He's hardly ever (if at all) on here anymore aswell
shame he won't let anyone else help out or run the site, I know a few have offered over the last year +

Sure...since it is free. Oracle has an "express" version (called XE), which is free to download and use. There are restrictions on what
you can do w/ the express version, tho, so would have to make sure it would fit the requirements...
