A repeat plea to Chris...

Chris,

Could you do something different with the Luego logo at the top of the page?

I can only use dial-up for accessing this site (no broadband or cable access in my village) and, at the moment, every time I change page the browser has to refresh the logo. This takes ages! As an experiment I turned off all images in the browser controls - this made this site REALLY fast to load its pages - but I couldn't see the envelopes any more, which is a PITA.

I think what's happening is that the browser thinks that the logo is new on every new page, even though it may have the same name. Whatever the cause is, it's bl**dy frustrating!

Can you set the logo once for each session, or don't change it quite as often?

BTW: I have no objection to Luego's advertising as it helps to pay for the site! (but I do object to it slowing down my access... )

cheers,

David

The problem with the banner is nothing to do with the rotation. It is because it is used as a trigger to update the 'last seen' time in the site's database - that is the last time you were seen at the site. I used the banner as it's the first thing that is loaded on the page.

This info is then used by the envelope code which compares the last seen time with the last post time on each forum and loads the correct icon.

I will have another look at it though and see if there is anything that can be done. I've learnt a bit more PHP now so I may be able to do the operation within the board's code rather than having to try and trigger some perl from the PHP. It's all a bit of a bodge...

Keep reminding me about it...!

Chris

i do the two windows at once approach, then theres always something loading in the background. Click a link, jump to the other window (ebay), read, click another link there, jump back here, read, etc etc....

works well but i have 150kb, which in itself is quite slow really.

Just over 50.... i never get more than 44 !!

Guess it helps to have a quick computer too, and how it's set up.

I do the 2 window switching too... but its very slow at loading both windows, especially if theres lots of pictures are stuff

Mine is running at 45.2kbps as we speak and it takes no time to swap pages. I used to have all kinds of connection problems till I asked BT and they upped the gain on the phone line, cured dropouts and random disconnections etc.

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

oh, cool. I had wondered about this. it doesn't seem to have been fixed quite yet, but hurrah if it going to be.

I'm on dialup half the time, it's a bugger.

Going back to the original problem..

I've managed to write the time logging code (was associated with the site logo) into the forum code natively in PHP. This should mean the logo caches as there are no server side operations associated with it. Can those cave men with modems comment if this has worked..?

Cheers, Chris.

Yes it's there when the page opens. It is a lot faster now but we are still signing up for broadband on the 14th. The 10 day wait will be a pain though.
