smiths clock wiring

I have a old smiths clock and would like to check it works (on the shelf) how can I do this please
it says on the front that its negative earth do I need to drop the battery voltage to carry out a check? how do I wire it.

there should be two terminals, hopefully labelled + and -; conect to 12 V and 0 V respectively. Note the 0 V tag may be connected directly to the instrument case.

The negative earth means 0 V is earth - and has no implicationsfor what you are doing.

From about 1968 on a lot of tradditional car clocks also have a mercury battery in them to keep the clock ticking when the car battery is disconnected for short periods.

If the clock dosen't work when connected the chances are the oil in the mechanism will have solidified -- usual cure is to wash it in solvent
