Electronic gauges, opinions?
Hi All,
Have been through the selection of smiths gauges my dad had put aside for the build many years ago. I realise that the rev counter is probably not
compatible as i think the aldon dizzy has a magnetronic or optronic kit in it (will have to check it) the water temp is capillery and the end is
knackered and the oil pressure requires a fluid line to it.
I really want to get away from this type and have electronic senders so i can run all the cables to a big multiplug under the dash for easy
removal.
I don't however want all in one units or space age single dials as the car is going to have a 60's club racer feel.
As its only for sprints/hillclimbs i'll need a rev counter, oil pressure, and water temp gauges. Plus a big idiot lamp for low oil pressure.
Can anyone recommend any gauges that would fit the bill?
Can put the oil pressure sender in an existing mount point on the block?
Will i have to have two seperate senders for the oil pressure gauge and the oil pressure warning light?
Is the water temp sender better placed in the top or bottom rad hose? or tapped into the stat housing?
The engine is a crossflow.

you can still get smiths electronic gauges to keep the 60's look
I believe Europa have several types as do Burtons etc
Life is like a bowl of fruit, funny how all the weird looking ones are left alone

crossflow has sender in the head, same side as exhaust, just below the thermostat.
trick is to find a compatible sender unit.

Smiths do reasonably priced electronic guages, you can get retro looking facias. The price is good, although i've had a few failures over the
years.

Bought my temp, oil and petrol gauges from Europa. Not too expensive.
I'm addicted to brake fluid, but I can stop anytime.

Have a look at the "RMD" range of instruments at Rally Design. These are
made by Caerbont who make gauges for other re-sellers as well and are very well priced.

these days they make Smiths, Green Gauges & Eclipse International and I beleve they make the Revotec ones and quite a few others....
so any of them should be as good as an other it just comes down to price and the looks

They are the same company, next door to each other and share the telephone!
I used them for Classic Smiths dials for my Cobra and a custom handbrake cable and would recommend them to anyone, although for cables you have to
know EXACTLY what you need or the bloke will relish bamboozling you.
The Smiths dials can be specced any way you want.

I had mine from ETB Instruments, they do all sorts of colours and bezels. They also have a number of sender options. I found them very helpful on the
phone and advising me what to use. They also re-calibrated my Tacho f.o.c. when I spec'd it wrong.

Thanks for all the great suggestions. Had a good think about price vs apperance and in the end i've gone for the TIM 52mm electronic water temp
and electronic oil pressure. can't complain at £30 and £25 respectively with all senders included. I also like the black bezel, simple white
numbering and white needle as its quite low key.
Just looking out for a 80mm tach with similar lettering and white needle, got a few on watch from the bay.
Some toggle switches and lamps are next on the list
