Which Laptop?

My lad wants a new laptop, nothing too fancy apart from a 17" screen. He is considering an Acer Aspire V-731 and a Toshiba Satallite C870-143.

Can anyone give any opinions, pros/cons? Anything will be gratefully received.

Cheers, Nick

I'd do Acer rather than Tosh, but that's about all I can contribute? I've had troubles with Toshiba before where Acer still seem to have a good track record.

On the other hand my wife has a Toshiba Satellite which is a few years old now and it's not been a moments trouble and in performance terms it seems to defy the fairly lowly spec!

Acer are a good buy in my book. Had mine a good while and it's good value for the price I paid.

I've an Acer, bought it this time last year after loads of research. It's been excellent.

Watch the key board bounce with some Toshiba's, a couple I saw were discounted down but the bounce was shocking.

Thanks folks, that's helpful.

Has anyone had experience with purchasing from 'Laptops Direct'?

Avoid Dell, we got a lenenvo from ebuyer and its been great only the budget version.

Does not look very flash but is robust and does all that is asked of it.

Thanks Mark. Never fancied a Dell laptop but have used Dell desktops for years at work and home, and to be fair they have been very good.

Acer are good I also have seen motherboard problems with Tosh.

One thing I will say is 17" screen in Laptop is is a bit of an oxymoron --- in mobile computing more is less --- less battery life, much less portable.
