photo uploader adding [1] to filename

When I browse to upload a pic using the photo uploader the site is automatically adding a [1] to the filename. Then when I try to upload it errors and displays a message relating to alpha-numeric filenames (ie my filename contains invalid characters - but the only invalid ones are the ones that its added?!).

Am I missing something?

You will most likely already have a file with the same name in your folder.
