Ancestry.co.uk you can do some searching on the site. The English records are very basic unless you go to the records office.

I found using search engines, ie http://www.dogpile.com/ got me a lot better response from any of the geo cites
But then, both my surname, and my mothers maiden names were not very common
The dogpile search is quite a cool one, as its searches a lot of other search engines at the same time, saving time
I presume there are better ones, but that's the one I use
good luck, it can be fun !!

Bought the missus an ancestry software pack a while back for her birthday, came with 6 months free gold subscription to ancestry.com the site itself
was pretty poor and only showed the most basic of stuff, a complete rip off if you ask me.
Cheers,
Bob

I had a lot of problems finding my paternal surname, and discovered that when my great Grandfather came to England from Ireland in 1857 The
Immigration clerk miss spelt my Surname, and it was only when we found that out, it opened up a new world
My mothers maiden name, is well documented back to about 1300 as Russian aristocracy and I would really like to visit some of the places in Russia
that the name was attached too
