People have made them fit. Just be aware tho they have a very short 1st gear which is a bit hopeless in a 7.

I've fitted an AJ6 (IS200 variant) to my car to replace the Toyota T50. Its a BIG gearbox. The tunnel in my car is wider than a locost and I
still had problems. I ended up cutting of a few projections and modding the tunnel. Here is a pic showing the RX8 box alongside a Type 9.
Its a great box and the ratios are superb apart from the aforementioned first gear. The IS200 box has a slightly taller first than the RX8 and I do
use first especially for an uphill takeoff.

Treat it like a close ratio 5 and use 2-6th. Ratios are similar to the quaife clubman close ratio but helical cut (less noise) and will handle 250hp
is a seven easily (designed for 200sx s15 as well look up aisin az6).
Got one in my Anglia bolted to a puma 1.7 engine. Currently have 4.1 diff but not run it yet so will see how that goes, will help with the longer 2nd
but limit 6th top speed.
Transmission Ratios
1st 3.760
2nd 2.269
3rd 1.645
4th 1.187
5th 1.000
6th 0.843
Reverse 3.564
Final drive 4.444

I'm building a ecoboost with rx8 gearbox
There is an adaptor plate on eBay for it
Start off in 2nd.
I saw a few Westfield's at stoneleigh with them in on a duratec and ecoboost
Thanks

Scusing my ignorance...
What's the attraction to the RX8 box? Something that will take the 300 bhp cost or what? (Given mention of an imperfect 1st gear)
Just interested

Good final gear
£60 so dirt cheap
Set off in second gear is fine
Fits the westy
A good cheap replacement for the type 9 which are now over priced and old.
Good for 300hp
Most rx8 cars died at 60k miles too
Thats my opinion.
Thanks

That's a big job isn't it?
Going from a live axle to independant rear end?

In my case it was in order to replace a T50 5 speed which was probably beyond it's sensible limit in strength terms.
When I fitted a 3SGE engine in my car a few years ago I had to mod the bellhousing of the T50 to suit. I knew from previous research that the
"T" series bell housing was the same as the "G" series so it made sense in my case to use the IS200 variant of the AZ6 rather
than an RX8. I simply (??) had to do the same mods again.
The ratios are even better (closer) than the RX8 box.
One downside was that the IS200 box has a 5 inch long gearchange remote. The lever doesn't just plug into the top like the RX8 does. So I had to
make a "reverse remote" to move the lever forward to suit my car. I also machined up a bush to replace the plastic cup on the bottom of
the lever. Its a good mod. You can buy them.
The lever itself had a rubber isolating joint about half way up. Splitting that open leaves you with a nice stubby lever, just right to put your own
gearknob on.
I then had to tackle the speedo problem. Mine is cable driven but the new box has an electronic output.
I love a challenge, me.
The pulses from the sensor now go to an Arduino mini computer which derives the frequency then outputs a variable tone to a stepper motor via a driver
board. I wrote the code myself with help from my son. I had to fit a little 3X step up gearbox betwixt stepper and speedo. I made adaptors on the
lathe. Lots of work, I know, but I was determined to keep my existing speedo. Other people have done similar using a servo motor. There are
(expensive) kits available.
I'm just regailing all this to possibly help anyone in a similar situation when replacing a Type 9.
On the cost side I paid £20 for my box including the prop. I have a spare box in the garage which cost me £1.20 Yes. £1.20
Total cost including a new clutch plate and a new propshaft was less than £200.
Overall it is one of the best mods I have done on my car. I can now cane it without keeping my fingers crossed and flicking through the close ratios
is hypnotic.
My spare box is available as a "test mule" for anyone contemplating a swap.

I am just looking for an upgrade from the type 9 as wanting to be prepared for when the type 9 gives up and what I've read the rx8 box is
stronger and will give me a better top gear for motorways etc ,,,and it's a load cheaper ,,my worry is will it fit in the tunnel or would I have
to modify the gearbox/ tunnel ...

Just to add another couple of plus's -
Helical gears - compared to a similar spec type 9 they will almost certainly be straight cut for 300HP and close ratio
The RX8 version has the same input spline pattern as the standard Ford so you can use a pinto clutch
Runs hydraulic release bearing but can be modified to take cable if needs be (info in Turbosport forum)
It is about 5-10kg heavier than a Type 9 depending on whether you have the cast iron or ally bell housing.
RX8 box has no speedo output, electronic or mechanical, so you may need to get a new speed that is GPS or can run off a prop/wheel pickup.
Just to complete there are versions of the Aisin AZ6 box in the Mk3 MX5 (often used for duratec conversion but is canted over at an angle), IS200,
Nissan 200SX S15, Toyota GT86 / Subaru BRZ, and obviously the RX8. Also to confirm it is not the box that is in the S2000, this looks the same but is
very different.
So, I guess the choice if you need 200+HP capability in a box is a Heavy duty, straight cut type 9 from Quaife / SPC / TranX / First Motion for close
on £2k or RX8 box (£100), adapter plate (£120) and a bit of time and effort to fabricate a rear mount.
