Is it me or Freeserve?
Not a problem with the website, but quite often whilst on line, the connection goes dead, still connected but in the connection properties box, no
bytes are being sent or recieved. Reconnecting cures the problem, but it is annoying.
Windows 2000P, US Robotics 56K External, computer is networked pier to pier, 1k Duron, 512meg, no problems with anything on the rest of the computer.
Made the computer myself in true locost tradition

We get it on freeserve but also used to get it with BTOpenworld. I think it's just that windows doesn't cope too well with 56k modem
connections. Ours is 98se. I've tried using different software that modifies the MTU and various registry settings but it's all a
compromise.
yours, Pete.
yours, Pete
I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

Thanks Pete,
If its not me, I'll just have to put up with it until broadband hits Crowlas in 2056!

Unforuntately its not freeserve. I get the same problems with my 56k modem on windows 2000 advanced server! Also built in true locost fashion with
parts scavenged from all over the place. Unfortunately a lot more locost than the car's proving to be!!
Try updating your modem driver, keep meaning to try that with mine but keep forgetting until it locks up again and I get too irritated and think sod
it, i'll do it from work!

could try a firmware update if your modem supports it to th v92 standard (i think thats the latest one?) in addition to the software/driver update
mentioned above...
Ned.
ps broadband is also available by satelite in remote/uncables areas, but not really locost....
I do enjoy my 100mbps connection!

Firmware is like a software driver only its embedded in a chip on the device itself (not pure hardware and not pure software either - hence firm!).
Some chips can be updated (flashed) with a new version of the instructions that were on it. The only place to get these is from the manucfacturer of
the device - check out the website of your modem manufacturer.
Good luck!
