IDEAS please Lowcost (classic) for daily driver.
I'm looking for inspiration for a classic car that I can run as cheaply as possible to and from work. It has to be in order of importance:
1) Tax free
2) Easy to work on.
3) Relatively cheap £2K top wack
4) Roofed :-)
5) As good looking as possible.
6) 30+mpg
It does not have to be fast. Just interesting.
Something to tide me over winter.
No mgb's.
Any thoughts?

1) Tax free
Yes! (1970)
2) Easy to work on.
Yes (bits are dirt cheap and easily available)
3) Relatively cheap £2K top wack
Yes if you shop around
4) Roofed :-)
Yep
5) As good looking as possible.
Yes if you get the wire wheels!
6) 30+mpg
Errrmmm.... Maybe when I've finished my locost and look at doing a diy EFI on it.
MGB is around 25mpg, but then my daily drive is my Triumph Tiger 955i (40+mpg and 0-60 in around 4.0 seconds).

Beetle... I can afford one ;-) But I'm from newquay. It may be a bit of a cliche..
Camper, can't afford one. You wouldn't believe how much they go for now.
Mk3 Cortina. Do they really do 30+mpg?
Mini, not old enough for tax free.
Sinclare err no. But environmentally...
Ford 100e :-) I like, but could I stop myself turning it into a dragster?
Imp err not my cup of tea
Escort mk2 = 4 door only at my money :-( otherwise hell yeah :-)
GT6 another nice thought. I'd have to have the tin top though
Volvo, well after you posted it 3 times I just had to have a look. That is stunning. Never seen one in the flesh though.
This is turning into quite a bit of fun. I think I'm leaning towards the Popular, the Volvo or the GT6.

Morris Minor is cheap, 30+mpg (just), and is certainly not fast!

Sorry Donut, I stand corrected. Probably the most sensible choice :-)

Problem is getting a Tax-free (pre 73) Mini for £2k with an MOT.
p.s. all GT6's were tin top, though lots of Spitfires have GT6 running gear and bonnets fitted.
