Internet Explorer 7 vs Firefox 2

Having just aquired a new Laptop with Vista Premium and stuff - after clearing out all of the crap that comes pre-installed I tried to get on with IE7. I've installed a number of other softwares NERO 8, Office 2007 and everything works ok, but much slower than my old XP machine - looks nicer though (which is quite superficial) but if it impairs speed... WTF??

Anyway - I've decided to dump IE7 in favour of Firefox. Firefox is just so much easier to use - especially adding favourites etc to the nav. bar.

Vista on the whole is a bloated piece of a pretty interface. CPU intensive and IMO a waste of time and money - especially as you need extra RAM (2Gb I have) to run slightly slower than its XP SP2 predecessor with less specification.

All IMHO - just wanted to get this off my chest.

Steve

First thing to do with vista is switch to classic mode and drop processor overheads. Everything should run a lot faster then. There's also a lot of websites out there that'll show you how to get rid of the bloaty stuff on vista and end up with something like XP.

Also, try dropping ms office for openoffice.org

office 07 is the same, for the average person it offers little more, but its massively more memory hungry to run.

Vista is insane tho, I run an athlon 64 3000+ and a Gb of ram, and the machine was fast enough on Xp. It was simply unuseable with vista untill I upgraded to my current 2.5gb.

I tried getting on with IE7 initially, but found I missed a few features, like firefoxes session recovery and stuff. I also find firefoxes download windows and stuff nicer and the whole browser just sits more easily with the way I use it. IMO IE 7 was an improved clone of FF1.6 and missed the bar.

i have had 2 laptps pre-installed with vista, I had a hardrive failure under warranty on the first and to speed things up a bit I agreed that dell would send me a replacementdrive and I would install it my self. TO my utter surprise when I installed it m self it ran twice as fast. I assume that all that bloaty crap I left out was slowwing i down.

On the second laptop I just formated and reinstalled the OS straight off the supplied CD, runs like a dream

It's a bloated piece of crap as you say. Interestingly the new service pack for XP (SP3) is reported to speed up the OS by up to 10%, which will make Vista look even worse.

Windows 7 should be out for Beta testing sometime in 2009 so Vista is already dead in the water.

Support for XP is to carry on till sometime in 2011.....apparently!
