I would like to brush paint my chassis in dove grey chassis paint. Can anyone recommend a good locost source? Can coloured oil based paint be mixed on request as coloured emusion can?

Any good paint factor will mix whatever colour you want.

Yep. Aslong as its enamel type any paint supplier will do it.

Tin or two of Red Oxide primer from Screwfix will do it.

I used Homebase/B&Q exterior black gloss for the top coat. 3.5 years later and no rusting yet.

Couple of coats of each- more in the vulnerable 'stone chip' areas.

Don't brush (except inside the angles) use a mini roller with a gloss sleeve. You'll get a much better finish - almost as good as sprayed.

POR15 is a very good undercoat, but costs a lot of money and doesn't wash off skin (don't ask ).

If doing again I'd get some good quality zinc rich primer.

i've heard plenty of stories of it coming off - which is why i'm getting tempted to pay for powder coating including zinc primer at a guessed 300 quid.

Properly applied POR15 needs some serious sanding (I needed a flap disc in an dremel to sand out some runs) to get it off.

But it is a pit picky to put on. If you don't clean the metal properly and then etch it (using the POR15 stuff) and finally put it on in thin coats then you can have problems. Slapping it on over greasy or shiny metal is asking for trouble.

Powder coating if you don't have the chassis degreased and blasted properly will come off in sheets at the water gets under it (and even then I've heard of people having the same problem with a stonechip). It's also a bugger to repair if you do damage it.

I've come to the conclusion there's no ideal solution. Zinc primer and enamel is as good as any and has the advantage of being cheap initially and easy to touch up.
