At what stage is it best to get the chassis inspected to obtain a VIN number?

Rolling chassis with engine fitted, then they can check which bits are new/donor and confirm engine number.

In my case (in Ipswich) they wanted the car pretty much complete - a short time before the SVA application goes in (which is the first time you really need the VIN anyway).

I applied for mine about 2 weeks ago, mine is almost complete (I keep telling myself). Take a look at the latest photo in my sig to see how far it is.

Easy enough to sort out, I phoned my local DVLA office (Leeds) and someone was out to check my chassis within the week.

reading this thread, i was about to ask who you speak to about a chassis inspection, but you've covered it in a nutshell! cheers fella...

Cheers guys. Most helpful.

What is it exactly that they're looking for? Just checking to see if you are gonna cause the death of yourself and dozens of others, or to make sure the chassis's legal?

Hmmmm, the usual consistancy with VOSA then. I made a number up and stuck it on my SVA application. No questions asked and no pre SVA inspections.

I believe they are just looking to make sure that the car is what you say it is, e.g. A 2 seater sports car.

Every region varies, so again I can only quote my own experiences with VOSA - when the man came he checked the VIN I had stamped on the chassis, the engine number, the style of car and the receipts for the bits.

Had a chat for 10 minutes, then went away!

Cheers guys. Have to rebuild my engine before I can complete the chassis, which should keep me busy for a few months, but VIN number not too far off.
