WEEKEND PROGRESS - ROLL CAGE
birdii - 16/5/11 at 11:36 AM

Had a nice chunk of garage time this week and made some progress fitting the roll cage at last!

I will point out now that this isn't for racing and never will be used for racing however i did have a look at the MSA book just for pointers into building a good cage.

The bent tubes were supplied by GTS about 5 years ago (it takes me a while to get around to jobs!), pretty happy with the kit considering the price (£140) except the side bars seem to be slightly uneven but can't work out yet where it is wrong.

I went for bolt in design for two reasons:
1 - just incase i hate it and find a full cage irritating!
2 - Might be beneficial for access at some time.

The plates i used for the front legs could have been larger in hindsight and included more bolts - might look at making them again.

The main problem i have now is that both side bars are the same height at the rear (where they join the main hoop) bot the nearside is a little low at the front (6 - 8mm). I'm not sure which is the best way to correct this yet, shorten the front leg on the offside or use a packing plate to raise the nearside.

Steering wheel clearance has also been an issue but it isn't quite in the right place now, next job is to move the column mounts and support bearing 15mm towards the car centre line.

Will work on the back stays tonight while i think about the problem with the front bars but all in all pretty happy!

Looks good to me, wish I'd done it at the beginning as well. Lot easier to do with the body work on.

you might want to rethink your fuel tank location. I can imagine it might obscure your vision.
