How similar the chassis dimensions of a Stuart Taylor and a Caterham are?
e.g. overall width of chassis, size of cockpit opening, etc.
I know they're probably fairly close, but I wondered - is one generally bigger / smaller, longer, thinner, etc.
Cheers all,
Adam.

ST (locost) is bigger. it is both considerably wider, longer, wider. the caterham chassis is also substantially stiffer and this is visual evident if
you get to look at one. In fairness when you buy a caterham that is where the value is...
hope this helps you out. if you need dimensions i can sort some out for you.
It is not considerably longer or wider. I have a caterham nosecone and bonnet on my locost, which is what an ST chassis is.
Adam
Is it wider or not, I wonder?
I've been told the IRS version is wider - I don't suppose they're different, but as mine is live axle, it may be narrower.
Who knows?
Cheers all,
Adam.
Both the Caterham and the ST use(d) the Escort live axle so they can't be much different in width. Wheelbase of the ST is slightly longer by
about 75-100mm.
Adam - so you've bought an ST Locost. What happened to the MK GT1? Have you still got it or did you sell it?

... but the end result is I sold it as a project (the new owner has posted on here as I recommended the site), to fund a road-ready car.
I should be getting it in a week or two.
The reason for this question was that I was interested in a full cage and saw a Caterham one for sale and wondered if it would fit - looks like it
might be too small by all accounts.
Damn!
Adam.
I agree with the 3 to 4 inch extra wheel base and would poersonally class that as a lot longer. i
The back end of the caterham i had access to was around 62 inches wide, the back end of the locost i had access to was 66 inches wide, the locost is
fitted with caterham arches so the locost chassis is around 4 inches wider. i believ the stuart taylor chassis is the sam e as the one i measured but
fitted with narrow arches making it about the same as the caterham at the overall.
what i was trying to sugest is that if you are talking about the cockpit opening, as i believ you were, from the measurements i have, you may find a
difference of about 4 inches.
cheers mate, happy roll cageing
Dunno about the Caterham, but the ST chassis I have in my garage is the same as "the book" in width, at 42" to the outside of the chassis in the parallel "cockpit" area.
I think the conclusion is that the Caterham chassis is 39" wide, and the Locost / ST is 42".
Therefore the cheap roll cage I spotted will be too small.
Oh well, worth a try!
Cheers again,
Adam.
