Chassis Leg Repair?
coozer - 28/6/11 at 04:21 PM

My little pug failed mot on excessive corrosion near front suspension mount...

It looks to be accident related as theres nowt else underneath. I've cut most of the really bad rot out and am wondering hoe to tackle the repair?

Do I weld a channel round the rail and a flat piece on top or just weld in bits and bobs to tie it all up??

I am tackling body repairs on my classic Mini Cooper at the mo' and meeting similar challenges. My strategy is to repair it the same way it was made.

Looking at the pic it seems that the underlying component is the tapered channel section (horizontal in the pic) which is braced by the secondary part (with holes in it) which is half lapped over the first part and welded on.

Therefore I would repair the underlying component with a bent up channel section, and then repair the secondary part with a plate over the top.

Does that make sense?

I agree with the above.

Thats how i would do it,put it back as close to original
as possible.

Ok, I'll have to chop a lot of the flat bit off.

Got any thin steel Andy??

Sod making it look even remotely original.
Cut out the blue, weld in 2 simple plates, the red then the green.

that looks familiar

I made these from some 3mm plate I had - they were brilliant jacking points once they were welded in....

Cheers all, its done now and great thanks goes out to Andy who guided me through it. Without Andy's help I would be still scratching me head now....

We ended up chopping a fair bit more out and welding 3 plates in. This let us weld from the inside of the original channel then box/cover the whole lot. As said, makes a decent jacking point

Cheers,
Steve

I see your ones got the anti-roll bar - you must have one of the posh ones

It was a pleasure to help out today Steve,i enjoyed the crack. We should

Nowt posh about it... P reg 1.5D Noisy, heavy steering 70mpg.... Is it because its a S2???

mcerd1 - 30/6/11 at 07:28 PM

^^ I think its just because its not an early s1 1.0 LX with a carb like mine...

I bet you'll have other fancy bits like a 5 speed gearbox, 4 stud wheels and rear windows that open

I don't think I'll ever forgive mango for scraping mine
