Hi All, just thought I would introduce myself. Building a Locost/Lotus inspired special. Anybody in the Chichester area who has, or is building, I would love to contact. Also anyone who has done a Ford V6 2.9i powered car, who wouldn't mind me picking there brain. Dare say I will be on here a few times trying to find out bit's and pieces. Keep up the good work, regards Chippy.

Ahh another V6 man, I am thinking along these lines too. I had a 2.8 V6 in my leaf sprung landrover. It went like a bat out of hell, and gave me 22mpg, which ws better than the LR 2.25 engine.
It was very revvy.. only problem was that you needed two lanes to hold it in a straight line at 100mph. Not funny in a leaf sprung 30 year old Landrover with drum brakes !!

Sorry I am not up your way either.. and as a noobie too, am looking for like minded chaps (and chapesses) in the Cambridge area.
I wanted to go to the Northern show at Harroate, but a 300 mile round trip in a diesel Landy is hard work... and definately an Ear Defender job.

I hope to sell my other landy tomorrow, and if so, the building will start in earnest! (poor old Earnest!)

I want a V8 or a bike engine (love the soundtracks on either!) but expect it will be what ever I can get my hands on or can afford, which is nearer the truth.

Mmmm http://www.v8engines.com I Listen to the openening soundtrack every day..
MMMm better than sex! (well nearly)

Regards

Geoff

Hmm... Must think up a silly name formyself!

Hi Chippy,

Welcome to the madhouse!

Well, I'm slightly more local to you than the others (Guildford)- still pretty far though!

We meet at Newlands corner (just outside Guildford) first Sunday of the month. Check the 'Clubs and Events' section for meets. Loads of people and cars there. As it happens it *may* not be on then in Sept as it's Donnington.
There are a few people around Brighton/Horsham so you're not completely on you own!

Anyway, all the best,

James

P.S. Just in case you check this tonight and you've nothing on tomorrow morning. We're meeting tomorrow near Salisbury. Check this (long) link:

one or two are using V6 fords - check my web site - but its not exactly a std car.

btw - many 'modern' engines make more power than the ford V6, but I wanted something different.

for example, vauxhall 2 litre make the same power as a V6 2.8 / 2.9 (150hp)

Hi , Wilkingj, I'm near Cambridge, in Shelford . Would also like to meet other builders. Not going to Harrogate but will be going to Donnington , may have a slot in the car if you need a lift. let me know. You have U2U, Rusty

Chippy - 15/8/04 at 09:35 PM

Thanks to all for the replies. I have actualy started my build, and pic's are in my archive, no rude comments please. I may get up to newlands corner in the near future, but pretty tied up at the moment, may be a couple of months, or so. Reason for using V6 2.9i is that I had one, (attached to a rusted out 4x4), so ABS etc. goes as standard. ATB Chippy.

looks very tidy mate, good progress.

Mark Allanson - 15/8/04 at 09:53 PM

what chassis plans are you using?

stephen_gusterson - 15/8/04 at 10:23 PM

beware the extra bonnet height a v6 will bring

I am using abs from the donor - ask me if you want o know my experiences of the complications that brings

The chassis plans are a combination of "the book", caterham, and yours truly. I felt that the book left something to be desired, even if hundreds have been built, and proved OK. I wanted to use as much of the donor as I could, so although it's plus four in the main, the front is plus a bit more, to take the 4x4 radiator, and Sierra rack. I have also increased the height from 13" to 14", as well as making the ground clearance 6", as I hope to make the exhaust run underbody. INDIVIDUAL or what, but dare say it's all been done before. ATB, Chippy.

I hope you're prepared for problems with the body work!

Think carefully about this before you cut metal- on a cold dark evening 18 months from now you may regret these early decisions!

I speak from experience!

All the best,

James

Chippy - 27/8/04 at 09:47 PM

Little confused at your remark about cutting metal, already done a lot of that getting this far. The body, as the rest of it, will be a little diferent from the norm. I intend to make the bonnet, and nose cone as one unit, hinged under the front, so it all tilts foreword, (maybe), depend how I feel by the time I get that far. I have quite a bit of experience in making bucks and moulding in f/glass, so the material of choice will not be metal. But thanks for the advise anyway. ATB Chippy
