Towing points
David Jenkins - 12/9/04 at 10:23 AM

When the nice man with the breakdown wagon came to rescue me and my car the other day, we came across an interesting problem - there's no really secure place to attach the winch hook on the front of a Locost.

We managed, but I was wondering how I could fit an eye to the front of the chassis in a way that would be strong enough to take the weight of the car as it was hauled up the back of a rescue wagon - or even to pull it out of a ditch, if necessary.

It would have to be fairly discrete to avoid upsetting the SVA man - perhaps it could be a screw-in eye bolt, as on my real car.

Any thoughts?

i have towing eyes welded at both rear corners and one at the front below the nose cone. Does the job justfine. i use them for strapping down on the trailer, towing and lifting the car on the hoist.

Thats what the roll bars for

You could weld a nut or a threaded insert into a front tube and carry the eyebolt with you.

It's what often gets used at race events - certainly the easiest for us at Harewood Hillclimb. After all, if the roll bar won't take the weight of the car it won't do it's job very well. Just mind your head on the rope

I wouldn't like to try it on the road, the slightest slip by the tower or the towee would result in loads of tyre smoke and a locost being towed backwards

I agree - but at the hillclimb it is never very far to tow the car.

I cut the towing rings off my donor car with the intention of welding them to my chassis when I eventually make it.
