Which kit?

Hi

Seeing as soon I am hoping to start building a kit car, I would like a few opinions on some kits. I do not want to start building from scratch as I am unexperienced with a welder at this moment and would like to build a kit before building everything myself.

1) Luego Viento: This one is looking the most appealing at the moment, since this will be a project with my dad, and he found it rather tight in a Westfield, the larger size will allow a lot more comfort. What about the kit? Quality? Ease of assembly?

2) Dax Rush: This looks like a very very top-spec car, but is it just looks? Seems very nice, but I assume it's the same size as a westfield so might be a bit cramped for my old man?

Engines are still undecided, with a possibility of a bike engine being fitted.

So any ideas which kit I should go for?

I am building an MK Indy and I am 6ft 4in and 19stone so it's definitely worth looking at the Indy and the guys at MK are very helpful.

Pavel,

i think you will find the dax to be a similar width (inside) to a westie or locost chassis but the squab seat design, longer cockpit and general layout make them much more spacious feeling.

From the two kits you have commented on my preference would be the Dax. Its an older more developed chassis and has some very nice design features. I have driven a couple and they handled quite nicely.

I feel the viento is just too big. If you can squeeze into something smaller then youll get the benefits in handling and performance. I saw a viento in detail last year and the quality seemed up there with the other locost suppliers, so at the end of the day you could do alot worse.

I have ordered a viento, mainly due to the size. Im not big but why squeaze in when you can streach out.Not going to be racing ,just sunday driving. As to the quality,on inspection looks very good hope after the built i can still say the same. All the guys( and gal) are great and very helpful.
Oh its got to be a v8 just for the music

I looked at a few before making final choice.
Very impressed with MNR Vortx. Marc is very helpful and the new car looks well smart.
Finally opted for the Mac#1ZR with pinto mounts. Not the cheapest out there but very impressed with Mac#1 set up. They prefer to build turn key cars and as such seem to have a well sorted chassis as a good foundation. Engine fits further back than most which should improve balance and handling. They have many colour choices as standard. If you get stuck sourcing bits they can supply everything. Mark and Colin are top blokes and the customer service looks v. good. Definitely worth a visit (Sheffield, approx 30 mins from MK).

Just waiting to take delivery. Leadtime currently 4 - 6 weeks. Mine is aiming for 4.


There were several kits that i ruled out purely on the grounds of the amount for sale as unfinished projects. My uncle is building one of them and wishes he didnt bother (the legend behind the name allegedly lived in a big tree and wore tights).

I too think the Luego is a bit large. Dax is good option but they seem quite pricey to complete.

No disrespect to Dax, But I was until recently an MOT tester (packed it in cos I didn't agree morally with what I was being asked to do as a mechanic, and a 1% wage rise was a p*ss take) and I had to do an MOT on a DAX. Now being 6ft 4in I personally found the Dax to be a fair tad short & narrow.
The best option is try try the cockpits before you buy.

Personally I dislike the viento just because of the size. it looks wrong, and I rattled around in the cockpit (I'm 6' tall)

Normally my advice would be to go to a big kit car show and try them all for size...
...trouble is (a) most of the big shows have been and gone this year, and (b) some of the kit makers have given up going to the shows (too expensive, big timewaster, etc.)

As you'll be spending a fair bit of money, have a look at the map and see how many manufacturers you can visit. Then ring up and see if you can get a test drive (or at least a ride, plus a sit in the cockpit). First, you'll get to see the cars in action, plus you'll get a feeling for the sort of customer service you may get.

Thank you everyone for the replies, very helpful.

The problem with your suggestions to go and take a look is that I do not live in UK, quite far from it in fact, so I can't simply drive up to the manufacturer.

I have a list of a few candidates, so when the time comes I'll just call the manufacturers up and decide which one suits me more, and where I get the friendliest support, since to me support after my purchase is just as important as the pricing and quality of the kit.
