Well not a happy chappy. Just been to exchange my Y size bottle of argoshield lite and been told that you now have to have a BOC account.Does that mean everyone on here has a BOC account and am I going to have to do the same!.....OR does anyone know where i can change a bottle for cash in Yorkshire!
Cheers Simon

I had one, it cost more than £100 p.a, they then charge you to replace the bottle and delivery to the depot

Cancel it and go to Adams gas it will save you in the long term.

When I made my chassis I used a lot of gas first year, changed the bottle and the next lasted 5 years so cost me over £500 just sat.

They do do larger bottles than 9litres, mine Argon bottle stands waist height and is 20litres, look at the trade gas prices.

Note, BOC do now do a hobby gas price if you ask, its less, still a rip off....

Regards Mark

I cancelled my contact for 3 bottles with BoC it was costing me over £300 per year on rental charges. I opened an account with a one time bottle charge company and after the first year I will save £300/year at least. Still have BoC account for my Acetylene as the company I am with does not do active welding gases. I believe there are companies that will do. I don't know of a company that will fill OEM bottles.

Cancel it. I use Rtech good service , fair price, initial deposit, then just the refill price , works out a lot cheaper.

It depends on how much welding you do, but I'm on this: http://www.boconline.co.uk/en/products-and-supply/industrial-gases/shielding-gases/argoshield/2-litre-argoshield-light-filled-cylinder/2-litre-argoshi eld-light.html

I've only used about half the gas over the 6 months or so I've had it, but for £19 a year it can hang around in case I need it!

Just find an engineering company that also deals in BOC. Turn up and ask for a cash swap. I've been doing it for years!

I'm after the same thing, which is best for general light mig work

5% Co2/ Argon Mix
20% Co2/ Argon Mix
Pure Argon

minitici - 14/5/13 at 04:45 PM

BOC now barcode all their bottles to try and stop the cash for refill trade.

mark chandler - 14/5/13 at 04:47 PM

5% argon

20%co2/argon

5% is for thicker steel

Pure argon tig/arc

Higher co2 is for thicker metal, 20% is higher. I use pure co2 for most things these days, pub cylinders are cheap.

My bad, really should read before posting, I find pure co2 can get a little messy! Anti spatter spray does help though!

rick1962uk - 14/5/13 at 09:01 PM

i have used pure co2 most pubs will sell you a bottle it costs about £12 to get them filled i swap gas for the odd bit of welding at my local pub

birdii - 14/5/13 at 09:09 PM

I use weld gas uk in Mansfield.

For pure argon i paid £50 deposit and then £30 for 10ltr at 200bar. No rental.

He does mixes for mig too which are cheaper than the argon.

The blokes name is Paul and the number is 01623420044. I have a mobile number too if you struggle to get hold of him.

I dont have any connection with the business, just a happy customer!

Thanks for the replies people.
How about this for an otpion.....not that im saying do it......if you have a empty BOC bottle open an account with BOC....they are doing away with administration fee at the moment. .....get your new bar coded bottle of gas....which are cheap....about £28 for a Y size bottle...take it home.....week later remove the plastic collar with the bar code on and put it on your old bottle (after removing the origial plastic collar) and take it back . Therefore you pay no rental on the bottle and can exchange when ever you want . Will only work if you have a BOC bottle to start with....which I have.....not that I condone it !!!!!
