Evening all,
For the Haynes Roadster, is ERW ok for the suspension tubes? Or have I ordered the wrong stuff?
Steel turned up today, chassis started woohoo!

It's what I'm going to use, although I've upped the thickness slightly. I was told that it should be ok as long as the seams are the right way round, IE hidden by the plate.
2mm wall ERW will be fine after all it's held in place by 1.5mm walled box section.
I ordered 1.5mm though. Is this too thin?
Just means your wishbones will be expendable I make mine in 2mm to cover my own back with what ever the end user throws the car at.
my lower wishbones on the roadster are 2.5mm cold drawn seamless. spend the money do it right do it once. i have seen plenty of bent erw wishbones

at the end of they day you will do what you want to do. I can only advise from my perspective.
This is my Perspective I built a roadster (and other cars).... from scratch...every single part.... i have driven it for nearly 4 years very very
hard, for thousands of miles all over europe, my wishbones are not bent. they didn't even bend when i hit a rear wheel on curb at 50mph,
destroying a wheel and bending the upright carrier.
Yup, thanks for the advice, will get some seamless thicker stuff for the suspension.
I'm sure I'll find a use for the 25mm ERW.
I'll use the 19mm stuff for the rear boot area...
Someone on here was suggesting a while back that 1.2mm was great for wishbones, after I had made a comment that I wouldn't want to go any thinner
than 1.6mm. Being totally stupid, I actually made mine from mechanical 2mm CDS. Stupid, but I'm happy with my stupidity, they're working
well.
Bottom rear arm, to the corner of the chassis is the one that takes the load. On slicks, the force through this a good 1-2 tons, safely in compression
though....
