I am looking at the collapsable steering column for the buggie im building and was curious what methods and ways people have gone around this for the IVA. i have looked around the net for things to buy straight up just to put into the column but i cant seem to find anything of use. cheers
I was watching an old episode of Wheeler Dealers earlier tonight. The one where they did a beach buggy. I noticed as they removed the Beetle column
that it had a collapsible section, it was a steel cylinder with diamond shaped holes through it - sort of like a super-thick chicken-wire. That looks
the sort of thing that could be transplanted into almost any column.

Dont CBS sell an off the shelf collapsing column ?
You could easily use something out of a landrover lower steering shaft

br />
Goes between the steering rack and the steering column, saves having a collapsable column which may be easier.

I used MX5
I looked at the beetle column and it looks like It might be of use as well as the land rover, I'm not familiar with cbs? What website is this? I
also had a quick look at the mx5 column an found this

Is this the same as you have used I assume the smaller shaft retracts into the larger one under impact?
This is a great help cheers
No. That's the lower part
Top picture is standard. Bottom picture is extended to do away with the lower part and is the standard spline pattern to link with the Sierra rack.
Both have been removed from the outer tube.
Standard column fitted (both parts) before I extended it.

Would this column be enough though? As I had my IVA yesterday and the tester wanted an upper collapsable part ie; if not using the series column then a collapsable boss
Most after-market steering wheel bosses are collapsable nowadays, i though? This can be determined by the partitioned areas that curve or bend outwards, usually concealed by a rubber sleeve. Either that, or as has already been mentioned, a Landrover joint; that's what I'm using on my build, as it also allows me to re-locate the steering system to avoid clashing with zetec oil filter.
I went through IVA recently and my tester checked the column, the angle of the steering shaft and the collapsable boss.
