Morning guys,

Following some recommendations on here I have painted my chassis with Tractol paint. I used the 816/BA16 Primer and then the chassis black. The chassis was all sanded back to bare metal and then I brushed the primer on and then a week later brushed on the chassis black. Its only had one coat of the chassis black at the moment but the top coat seems to chip easily, some corners of the metal work have rubbed through from just putting the scuttle on and off a few times. Does it just need a second coat or do I need to do something else?

I did similar to you, brush painted red oxide primer, then 2 top coats of Jenolite chassis black. Probably 2-3 weeks between coats IIRC.

The red oxide was excellent and keyed really well with the bare steel. The chassis black was pants and chipped way too easily. The problem is, once it's on there there's not much you can do short of stripping it and starting again. Anything you put over the top will chip just as easily.

On the plus side, it is very easily touched up if you do chip it.

Once the floor is fitted that protects a lot of the underside, but on the more exposed areas I added a layer of brushed on stone chip protection. This held up very well as it stays slightly soft so "absorbs" chips rather than falling off.

Exactly, after all the time and effort that has gone in I don't really want to strip it all off and start again. I did wonder about some sort of lacquer? stone chip sounds good, what sort did you use?
