Hi all
A quick question.
Does a rear roll hoop have to comply with the MSA rules for track day use if the car is running slicks?
I don't want to fit a full cage but planning on tracking the car and want to have the option to run slicks in the future.
Thanks
Ben
Road going class technically does not even have to have a roll hoop but you would be mad not to have one. An RAC style roll over bar should be the minimum IMO. Most RAC bar owners use a reinforcing strut to the passenger floor (because hill climbs are dangerous so I am told) Slicks don't comply with list in my blue book for road going class. However possibly for modified ? class.
I really wouldn't recommend a petty strut. This is what the lady who died at Goodwood hit her helmeted head on, if it had not been there should would had survived. Full cage or rear hoop with back stays.
Trackdays arent run under the MSA authority as they are not competetive, generally as long as the car is road legal, you can run on trackdays. Some wont allow slicks though.
theres no standards for trackdays really
its up to the trackday organisers/owners
they just say, adequate roll over protection required for slicks.
if you turn up with a roll cage made of papier mache then they wont like it
its at their discretion if they allow you to run slicks or not
I've seen in the T+Cs for a few track day companies that you have tohave a full cage if you want to run slicks. It's never mentioned what standard of cage and I've never seen it enforced.
see:http://www.trackdays.co.uk/car_track_day_guide/
"You can use slick tyres on trackdays but it is at the discretion of the event organisers. If you are thinking of using slick tyres you will need
to contact us before you make a booking to check if the event you are looking to book onto will allow you to use slicks. If you are using slick tyres
the car must have either a roll cage, or roll bars fitted and we suggest that you only ever use slicks in perfect trackday conditions"
I guess there must be a message in there somewhere. I use semi slick 888 and have a full roll cage.
