I'm a bit concerned about cutting my propshaft and welding it shorter. The last thing I want is for it to snap and tear through my leg. Have any of you guys came across propshaft that would fit the sierra diff and gearbox but only 2/3rds the length of the original or have you's thought about a light way of keeping a broken propshaft safely within the transmission tunnel?
I wouldn't worry about welding the prop. It's relatively easy, main thing is to make sure all the old shaft is off the UJ bit and shaft is nice and square when you mate it back (in the same angular orientation) I've done several and had no problems at all.
The propshaft is probably the most dangerous component in the car!A short one is most lethal..If one end comes adrift and gets out of the tunnel, the
shaft becomes a single blade propellor. A U joint does not provide constant velocity when run at an angle, so the driven end 'whips'. It is very
important that the joints on either end of the shaft are phased correctly, and the engine /gearbox flanges are adjusted in the same plane so that the
ends run at equal but opposite angles...i.e. when one joint is speeding up,the other is slowing down, cancelling each other out, resulting in a
constant velocity at the shaft ends.
Best left to an expert..your luck can run out very easily with the driveshaft!!
now ya scaring me, i hope you don't work for any well known propshaft clinic places, Dennis
I bought my prop ready made.
I did this for a coupe reasons. First was the risk of it failing catastrophically. Second was the hassle of getting a yoke for the box end. A sierra /
granada has a horrible rubber donut and you need to get bits from a transit to fit a type 9 box. I got a prop, about 720mm long, complete, made to
order, brand new, from reco-prop in Luton
cost 123 quid plus vat
steve
£123, bloody hell, that means you've only got £127 left to spend
plus vat? that only leaves you with £105 and you had to buy a book
Theres a recon propshaft for a Locost on Ebay at the moment, current bid is only £20.
No connection etc....

Which suddenly flips, pinning you underneath.
At night the ice-weasels come...
yep, it might have been 150 quid or so all up for the prob, but i know im more likely to have just the one as**ole that way, withou the prop
installing a new one!

Hi Steve,
I still think I'll have a go at making my own.
I could do with another assh*le as I'm always talking out of the one I've got
does , sierra, marina, cortina, count as cut n shut, if so i have a cut n shut prop
We got ours made by the people who (apparently) do them for Lister race cars... Cost 60 quid. I will ask my cobuilder the name and number... basically supplied them with the Escort one and it came back shortened and painted, all balanced up.
Not trying to teach people how to suck eggs, but, if you do your own prop it can be balanced easily with a jubilee clip, any vibration put a clip around it, the screw bit acts as the weight, keep re positiong till the vibration goes away, but the props are that short you probably won't have any problems anyway,
Right, it was Wilson driveshafts in nottingham 0115 9761202. Think it cost us 60 quid or so. Supplied them with our 'scrote one and a length measurement, and it came back all done nice.
I'm with you Jon (for once), I'm looking forward to the joys of owning my own propshaft. Takes me back to the school days of playing russian roulette with a spud gun
