X-drive?
akumabito - 17/1/05 at 08:40 PM

I just had another stupid idea... what if you could make the suspension arms really long.. and not only that, but place 'm on an angle, so the wheels would actually stick out further than the body, as in a sort of X-shape, or a bit spider-like...

Of course it would have no real-life benefits, but it could look cool nonetheless... (in a silly way perhaps)

Be prepared for a really crappy concept picture made in MS Paint...

Joe 90 used something similar.

Stupid question alert:

Who/what is Joe 90?

imagine the stress on the rear CV joints

Some 70s single seaters did similar to this on the rear. It leads to crap lateral support of the wheels and a good bit of rear wheel steer.

two motorbikes leaning on each other? Maybe mating?

I believe one of the big soft drinks companies intended in entering a similar design world rally car but shelved the idea when the Group B regulations were changed.

It had a turbo changed 2 stroke engine running at a constant (optimum) rev feeding energy into a hydraulic acculator, which it turn transferred the power (via hoses) to hydraulic motor/gearboxes mounted at each wheel.

Clever electronics would provide power distribtion and traction control with the capability of each wheel being in a different gear (if necessary)!

Not sure if it ever got off the drawing board, but cool anyway.

Hmm,
Hot hydraulic oil squirting in all 4 directions; how is that going to sell more colas?

Peteff - 18/1/05 at 08:16 PM

Why? A place I worked at years ago had fork lifts with twin cylinder diesel engines driving a central pump feeding hydraulic wheel motors. Surely upgrading the pump would have been better and more reliable than sticking a screaming engine in.

Have a look at www.bigrat.co.uk

It's like Thunderbirds but with thicker strings.
